Bachelor of Engineering (commonly abbreviated as B.E. or B.Eng.) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded to a student after three, four or five years of studying engineering at an accredited university in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Finland, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Nigeria, China, India and Pakistan. It is a professional degree that involves undertaking some engineering work. This is controlled by the national professional engineering society or institute that accredits the universities, usually regulated by law.

Some institutions award either a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree to undergraduate students. In some cases, Bachelor of Engineering degrees area also given to students who take engineering courses.However, many universities in Canada only award the Bachelor of Applied Science degree for their accredited undergraduate engineering programmes (never the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degrees).

In India, the Bachelor of Engineering is a degree awarded by many universities. Bachelor of Engineering degree is awarded to a student who has completed four years course ( eight semesters ) in engineering. The entry to B.E is 10+2 years of schooling or completion of Pre-University course( PUC ). Diploma holders in engineering are also eligible for entry into B.E. Diploma holders of engineering enter degree course, by lateral entry which gives some concessions in study of subjects. The B.E degree is awarded by the university in field of engineering in which student has studied for four years

Industrial revolution succeeded by materialistic developments that we witness around is the repercussion of engineering. This discipline is extremely broad and encompasses a range of more specialised fields with multi-dimensional scope integrated with inter-disciplinary applications. Nowadays, the scope for different branches has been multiplied several times. With increasing number of branches, sub-branches and technological advancements in engineering, a range of scope has been emerging every day.


 The Bachelor of Engineering degree is one of the most pursued Degrees in the world. Bachelor of Engineering degree programs generally last 3 to 5 years depending upon the country. In India, the duration of Bachelor of Engineering Degree spans over a period of 4 years. The 4-year course consists of 8 semesters of instruction and a project in final year. A person seeking the Engineering Degree needs to study 5 subjects. There are various number of combinations of subjects, which one can opt for depending upon the availability of choices in various Institutes. It is popularly known as B.E. which is an abbreviated form of the Engineering Degree. Engineering Courses are offered by most Public and Private Universities in India. Some of the universities in India award B.Tech. i.e.; Bachelor of Technology instead of B.E for same Engineering Course. Some Institutions award a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Engineering Science (BESc), Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) or Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree to undergraduate students of engineering study. For example, Canada is the only country that awards the BASc. degree for graduating engineers. In India, some Universities like B R Ambedkar Bihar University, Vinoba Bhave University etc., offer Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.Sc. in engineering) in place of Bachelor of Engineering. It is equivalent to B.E. or B.Tech. Engineering students work are involved in planning, designing, construction, production, testing, implementation and maintenance etc. Students work on scientific theories to get practical solutions. Engineering extends it's branches catering to industries, technology and business.



Aeronautical / Aerospace Engineering: Aeronautical engineers are in great demand due to boom in aviation industry.


Agricultural Engineering: This branch has limited scope of employment because of the dwindling interest in agriculture.


Automobile Engineering: With the increasing number of vehicles, this branch of engineering offers employment in bulk.


Biomedical Engineering: With healthcare industry on boom, Bio-medical engineers are in high demand because of the increasing application of medical devices like MRIs and EEGs, etc. 


Ceramic Engineering: Ceramics are formed between inorganic and nonmetallic elements. Ceramics are helping computers and other electronic devices operate, improving people’s health in various ways and protecting soldiers during combat.


Chemical Engineering: With industrialised economy, chemical engineers have multi- scope for making available the modern high-quality materials.


Civil Engineering: Civil engineers are always in great demand in every field of construction such as power plants, bridges, roads, railways, transportation and traffic.


Computer Science Engineering: Multidimensional scope in software firms, research opportunities in computer robotics and in communication systems and outsourcing.   


Electrical Engineering: This is one of the core branches of engineering that offers vast scope of employment in public as well as private sectors.


Electronic & Communication Engineering: A relatively new branch of engineering having scope in public as well as private sectors with varied application.


Environmental Engineering: With the rising rate of pollution environmental engineers are in great demand to control water and air pollution, conduct recycling and waste disposal.


Geomatic Engineering: A rapidly developing discipline focuses on spatial information. Geomatics engineers manage local, regional, national and global spatial data infrastructures. It’s a booming branch of engineering.


Industrial Engineering: This branch has opportunities in abundance like mechanical engineering in various industries.


Information Technology (IT): IT is the new format of Computer Engineering. It offers positions like database administrator, webmaster, programmer and company analyst.


Instrumentation Engineering: This branch has limited scope in public as well as private sectors offering instrument engineers and technicians handful of job opportunities.


Marine Engineering: Marine Engineers are the members of a ship's crew that operates and maintain the propulsion and other systems onboard the vessel. They are in average demand.


Mechanical Engineering: This is an ever green branch of engineering. Mechanical engineers are required in every sphere of life.  


Mining Engineering: Mining engineers are associated with the mitigation of damage or changes to an environment as a result of production and processing. They have several job opportunities.


Nuclear Engineering: Nuclear engineers are specifically involved in nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons. It also offers an array of opportunities.


Ocean Engineering: Ocean engineering offers limited scope in submarines, which is common to the entire ocean including waves, seawater, and hydrostatic pressure.


Petroleum Engineering: It focuses primarily on exploration and production of Oil and Gas. The principle of engineering sciences for the recovery development and processing of petroleum.


Software Engineering: With the rise in the use of computer everywhere, software engineers are in great demand because of diverse usage of computer.


Systems Engineering: Systems engineering integrates other disciplines and specialty groups into a team effort. This is in great demand because of its integrating features.


Telecommunication Engineering: This sector involves the telephone, computer, radio system, satellite communications, earth stations and cellular phones industries.


Textile Engineering: Textile engineers are in great demand in export houses and textile manufacturing units.


Only students from the science stream completed 10+2 level (XI and XII) are eligible for the Bachelor of Engineering course. Students are admitted on the basis of std XII marks or State-Commom Entrance Test (CET) or Deemed University entrance Exam or centralized All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Selection to BE/B.Tech is based on merit i.e the marks secured in the final exams of 10+2 and through entrance exams. Entrance to the IIT's is through 'JEE' (Joint Entrance Exam) and for other institutions through their own separate entrance exams and other state level and national level exams. Most of the institutes conducting engineering courses in Aeronautics consider JEE score as the qualifying grade. Diploma holders in engineering are also eligible for persuing BE/B.Tech courses by admitting to Direct Second Year of degree course based on the percentage obtained in Diploma course.
