Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is a premier recruitment exam for employing Class – 1 engineer officers in Govt. Departments. The exam is usually conducted by UPSC every year in the month of January. ESE is 3-stage recruitment process involving 2 stages of written exam (Objective in stage 1 and conventional in stage 2) followed by an Interview.
Every year, ESE is used by the premier govt departments such as MES, Railways, BSF etc. as a recruiting tool. Out of the humungous number of engineering disciplines, only the following 4 are considered in ESE:
Civil Engineering.
Mechanical Engineering.
Electrical Engineering.
Electronics and Telecommunication engineering.
The ESE full form is the Engineers Engineering Services Examination. The IES or IESE qualified candidates work for the Indian government and is categorised as Class – 1 Officer are members of the Indian Engineering Services (IES) or Engineering Services Examination (ESE).

UPSC determines the number of IES vacancies for each year. A total of 247 vacancies have been announced for 2022. These openings are subject to the category-based reservation system. Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) will be given priority for seven positions (03 vacancies for Locomotor Disability including Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy & 04 vacancies for Hard of Hearing). The number of openings is subject to change.

Nationality
Candidates holding any of the following Nationalities can apply for UPSC ESE 2022 exam:
Citizen of India or
Belongs to Bhutan or Nepal or
Tibetan Refugee, who had come to India before 1st January 1962, and have their permanent settlement in India or
Emigrates from Countries like Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, Burma and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire, United Republic of Tanzania, Vietnam and Ethiopia who intend for permanent settlement in India.
All the candidates from Neighbouring Countries must hold an Eligibility Certificate from the Government of India.
Educational Qualification
A degree in Engineering from a recognized College/University.
OR
Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India)
OR
Bears a degree/diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/College/Institution recognized by the Government for the purpose
OR
Qualified the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India)
OR
passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India
OR
passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959
A candidate applying for the post of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Service Gr ‘A’ bearing the following educational qualification, apart from the ones mentioned above is also eligible for ESE 2022.
An M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.
Students who have appeared for any of the above exams in 2022 are also eligible for ESE 2022.
ESE 2022 Age Limit
Age must be within 21-30 years, as on 1st January 2022. They had to have been born between January 2, 1992, and January 1, 2001, to qualify.
The Date of Birth as mentioned in the certificate of 10th Exam will be considered for age count.

There are two papers in IES Stage-II. Questions from the chosen Engineering subject (Civil Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Electrical/ Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering) will appear on both papers. There is no provision of negative marks in Mains papers.

IES Syllabus

The syllabus for the IES Mains Paper I and IES Preliminary Paper II is the same. The difference lies that, in the preliminary examination, only objective questions are asked while in the mains paper, subjective questions are asked.
