Computer applications courses are offered at all levels and can be part of many types of academic programs. Courses prepare students for a variety of jobs, including basic jobs such as data entry all the way up to more advanced positions such as graphics designer and Web designer.

Computer applications courses are generally available through certificate, associate's and bachelor's degree programs in Web design, graphic design and computer applications. Some programs focus more on operating basic software such as Microsoft Office while others focus on more intermediate and advanced topics such as using HyperText Markup Language (HTML), graphics design software such as Adobe InDesign and Adobe's photo-editing application Photoshop.

This introductory course provides students with the opportunity to practice using computer operating systems. They use graphic design applications, spreadsheets and the Internet. The course often includes information about the social, political and economic effects of Internet and technology on society. Students examine modern examples of how technology is used for research and communication. A course such as this can be taken as a beginning part of many programs to ensure students can use computers.
