Important Guidelines for Ph.D. Application
- Online Application Form & Information Brochure (including the admission schedule along with the important dates) is available on the Institute website at the link, http://www.iitb.ac.in/newacadhome/phd.jsp
You are required to submit the application ONLINE. No Downloadable Forms will be available. After filling the form, you are advised to take a print of your application and keep the same for the record.
The application fee is as follows:
Women candidates : 150/- Late fee - 650/-
SC/ST/PwD category candidates : 150/- Late fee - 650/-
All other candidates 300/- Late fee - 800/-
The fee is to be paid by SBI Internet Banking/ Online Payment System and you do not have to submit the printed copy of the application. Applications without online payment details will not be considered.
- You can apply for up to THREE disciplines/specialisations.
- Along with your application, you have to submit a Statement of Purpose or a Research Proposal as required by an academic unit.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is basically a national examination on the comprehensive understanding of the candidates in various undergraduate subjects in Engineering / Technology / Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Arts, Commerce and Science.
GATE 2025 will be conducted for 30 Subjects (also referred to as “papers”).
GATE 2025 examination will be conducted over FOUR days and EIGHT sessions on Saturday 1st, Sunday 2nd, Saturday 15th, and Sunday 16th of February 2025.
The GATE score would reflect the relative performance level of the candidate in a particular subject, which is quantified based on several years of examination data.
GATE result 2025 will be released on March 19, 2025.

A candidate is allowed to appear either in ONE or UP TO TWO test papers. Please see the page Two-Paper Combination for more details.
The test papers will be in English. Each GATE 2025 paper is for a total of 100 marks, General Aptitude (GA) is common for all papers (15 marks), and the rest of the paper covers the respective test paper syllabus (85 marks). Click here for detailed pattern of the question papers.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - National Eligibility Test, or CSIR NET 2025, will be held in June 2025 and December 2025. CSIR is a National Eligibility Test organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA). CSIR provides Research Fellowships for training in research methods under expert guidance of faculty members/scientists working in University Department/ National Laboratories and Institutions in various fields of Science.

UGC NET 2025 Exam will be conducted in the second week of June 2025. UGC NET (University Grants Commission – National Eligibility Test) is an Indian standardised test. It is conducted to determine the eligibility for the position of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship & Assistant Professor.

NTA will provide the UGC NET 2025 application correction facility from the first week of February 2025.
NTA will provide the UGC NET 2025 registration form through online mode, no offline method will be available.
Candidates will be able to start filling the application form in the last week of December 2024.

The CEED 2025 application form is currently open for admission to M.Des and PhD courses. CEED 2025 exam will be conducted on January 19.
IIT Bombay has started the admission process for CEED 2025. The CEED 2025 application form is open with regular fees from October 1-31; with late fees, the last date to register is November 8, 2024.
The application form is for admission to the M.Des and PhD courses offered by participating colleges.
The CEED 2025 exam will be conducted on January 19, 2025.
The exam will have two parts - 1) computer-based Part A, and 2) offline-based Part B.
CEED 2025 Registration Form must be submitted through the online application website. Registration portal will open on October 01, 2024.
Please read the information given in the Information Brochure before filling out the form. If you face any problem while filling the form, you can report it by clicking the "Report Problem" button on the right side of the form.
PwD candidates can avail services of a scribe (amanuensis) for Part-A of the examination, but not for Part-B. See the information brochure for requisite forms and details.
Candidates must attempt questions from both the parts.
Part-A contains objective questions of three types: Numerical Answer Type (NAT), Multiple Choice Question (MCQ), and Multiple Select Question (MSQ). Answers to Part-A have to be given on the computer. These will be design aptitude type questions that evaluate visual and spatial ability, environmental and social awareness, analytical and logical reasoning, language, observation and design sensitivity of the candidates.
Part-B consists of five questions that are aimed at testing design, drawing and writing skills. The questions in Part-B will be displayed on the computer screen and the answers are to be written in the answer book provided by the invigilator.
The final score is calculated as follows.
Final score = 0.25 × Marks scored in Part-A + 0.75 × Marks scored in Part-B

ELIGIBILITY CRITERION FOR PH.D. ADMISSION A.5.
1) General eligibility criterion for Admission in all academic units : Departments, Centres, Schools and Interdisciplinary Groups: Qualifying Degree:
1. Master’s or equivalent degree in Engineering/Technology
2. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology
3. Master’s or equivalent degree in science
4. Master's or equivalent degree in Arts/Commerce (or allied subjects)
For qualifying degree listed under (2), (3) & (4), candidates must also fulfil ONE of the following additional requirements: a) Valid GATE/CEED/ score b) Selected through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) c) Selected through a National level examination conducted by MHRD or its agencies /Institutions such as UGC/ IIT/ IISc./ IISER/ IIIT etc. (d) Selected provisionally for the DST-INSPIRE Fellowship (provisional award letter to be produced) e) Minimum of TWO years of professional experience (acquired after obtaining the qualifying degree and completed before the starting of the semester in which admission is sought)
1.You MUST upload the following while submitting the Ph.D. Application.
Scanned version of photograph.
Scanned version of signature.
Mark-sheet of the last semester/ Consolidated mark-sheet of the qualifying degree. Result awaited candidates have to upload their latest/previous semester mark-sheet.
Caste Certificate (OBC-NC/SC/ST), if applicable. An affidavit for having applied in case the certificate is not yet received.
Economically Weaker Sections(EWS) candidates needs to submit EWS certificate issued by the Competent Authority in the prescribed format.
PwD Certificate, if applicable.
Sponsorship certificate, if applicable.
(please upload Sponsorship Certificate, If not available then attach Self-Declaration letter stating that the sponsorship certificate will be given at the time of Interview/ Admission).
Project Staff/ Institute Staff should submit No Objection Certificate (NOC)’ a letter of recommendation from the Principal Investigator (PI)/ Head/Office-In-Charge at the time of application.
Statement of Purpose (SoP), a sample of writing (if applicable), research proposal (if applicable), as a single file irrespective of the number of disciplines/ specialisations.
2. OBC-NC candidates may note that the limit of annual income is Rs. 8 lakhs for determining the creamy layer among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) candidates.
The OBC-NC certificate issued for the financial year 2024-25 by the Competent
Authority in the prescribed format must be uploaded in the ONLINE application form and submitted at the time of admission.

3. Economically Weaker Sections(EWS) candidates may note that the limit of annual income is Rs. 8 lakhs for determining the eligibility for benefit under Economically Weaker Sections(EWS) reservation.
The EWS certificate issued by the Competent Authority in the prescribed format must be uploaded in the ONLINE application form and submitted at the time of admission.

Students must submit self-attested copies of his/her qualifying degree certificate & final transcripts on or before 31st August, 2024 (admitted in Autumn Semester)/January 30, 2025(admitted in Spring Semester), failing which admission will stand cancelled.
Candidates who are currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or who have completed any government approved degree program in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts/ Humanities are eligible to appear for GATE 2025.
Candidates can go through the given UGC NET 2025 eligibility criteria before filling out the application form:

The UGC NET syllabus will be released separately for all the subjects by the authority. Appearing candidates in the exam must prepare subject wise for the exam.
A new subject “Indian Knowledge System” as added in the list of subjects from 2022 year. The syllabus will be different for both papers Paper I and Paper II. Topics will be asked from General Paper on Teaching & Research Aptitude, English, Law, Commerce, etc. The detailed syllabus of UGC NET 2025 will be checked by the candidates in two languages i.e. Hindi & English.
CEED 2025 will be in two parts (A & B). Part-A will have questions related to the following topics:
● Visualization and spatial reasoning: Ability to visualise and transform 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships.
● Practical and scientific knowledge: Know-how of scientific principles and everyday objects.
● Observation and design sensitivity: The capacity to detect concealed properties in daily life and think critically about them. Attention to detail, classification, analysis, inference, and prediction.
● Environment and society: General awareness of environmental, social and cultural connections with design.
● Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to analyse qualitative and quantitative information.
● Language: Proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English.
● Creativity: Grasp of verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs, and symbols.
● Art and Design knowledge: Awareness about art/artifact/product, artists/designers, art/design history, and trends.
● Design methods and practices: Knowledge of media, materials, production processes, and ergonomics. Part-B of CEED 2025 will have questions related to the following topics:
● Drawing: Ability to draw products, people or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective, and shading.

● Communication: Skills to communicate concepts and ideas clearly with the help of text and visuals.
● Problem identification: Skills to understand the user and the context, knowledge of properties of materials and their appropriate use in design. CEED 2025 is an aptitude test; hence, no specific textbook or guide is recommended for its preparation. Candidates may, however, practise their drawing, rendering and visualization skills.
Question papers of some previous years are available on the official CEED website. Note: The suggested topics are exhaustive and indicative of the nature of the questions. However, the CEED 2025 may not cover all the topics.
