The department looks at sound as a narrative device in cinema. To foster an organic aural imaging culture in the contemporary film practice, students are immersed in various streams of audio techniques, from on-location recording, studio recording, dubbing, track laying &designing to finally mixing for particular outputs.

Sound practical:
introduction of ‘audio-equipment’ used in location, location recording with and without picture reference, introduction of ‘audio-equipment’ used in studio, studio recording with and without picture reference, demonstration of multi-track recording, shooting with audio
Theory components:
Script to screen and projection theory, microphones, speakers and basic acoustics, frequency and loudness levels, equalization, architecture of mixing console, psycho acoustics and monitoring systems, synchronization and digital technology, mono, stereo and surround formats, sound designing and analysis of sound tracks.
Practical exercises:
Location recording, studio based recording and demonstration on multi-track recording & mixing.
Specialisation (2nd to 6th semester)
Theory:
Foundation in the field of ‘film sound recording’ with a detailed insight into sound and its related technologies. Topics covered include the structure and function of the ear and basic principles of auditory awareness, propagation of sound in a media, Room Acoustics, dubbing, music recording, surround sound recording, sound editing, mixing, sound manufacturing and sound design techniques etc.
Bachelor's Degree with Physics as a subject at Senior Secondary (10+2) level
