M.Tech. in Marine Engineering (M.Tech. ME) is a postgraduate course in designing, manufacturing and operating ship parts and shipbuilding. The minimum eligibility for this course requires passing Mechanical/Marine engineering from a recognized university.

M.Tech. ME is a two year program which is often offered with other disciplines such as M.Tech Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, M.Tech in Marine Management etc. The mode of admission is mostly through GATE Examinations or Personal Interview and Group Discussion.

The average tuition fee for entire course ranges between 1.5 Lakh INR to 3 Lakh INR.

M. Tech ME graduates can choose from jobs in the Shipping, Marine Machinery manufacturing industries, Indian Defence Forces, Ports and Marine Workshops etc. They can work as Design Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Chief Security Officer, Navy Personnel, Chief Engineer etc. A fresh graduate of this course can expect an annual salary of between 2.5 Lakh INR – 3.5 Lakh INR which would only increase with experience in the field.

Eligibility Of the Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Marine Engineering)

The eligibility for this requires, passing the higher secondary school certificate (10+2) examination from a recognised school.

The candidate must have graduated with B.E/B.Tech in Mechanical/Marine engineering from a recognized university.

Minimum percentage of marks in graduation is generally from 50% to 60%. 

How to Get Admission in Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Marine Engineering)

The admission process is based on either the GATE Exam and its score or personal Interview and group discussion. Some of the Exams for M.Tech MEare as follows:

GATE: Graduate Aptitude Test Examination (GATE) is the most common exam, the score of which is accepted by many colleges and universities. For M.Tech Marine Engineering, there is no such category in GATE. However, students can apply for the same through Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Sciences.  The application forms are available in September and the examination is held in January.

Selection Process

The selection process varies in two ways from college to college:

a) By accepting the candidate’s admission solely on the Entrance Examination Score

and/or

b) Declaring a merit list based on candidate’s performance in Entrance Exam as well as their qualifying score.

This is often followed by a personal interview.
