B.Tech Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering

Bachelor of Technology in Naval architecture & Ocean Engineering

Stream Merchant Navy
Course Type Degree
Duration 4 Years

B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is 4- year long undergraduate engineering program aimed at preparing students in the concepts of design and construction of marine crafts and structures. CET is conducted for admission to the course. The course is divided evenly into 8 semesters, with each semester lasting a period of 6 months. During each semester, students are taught separate sets of theoretical subjects and also exposed to practical lab sessions.

The minimum eligibility for admission to B. Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is a class 12th/ Higher Secondary qualification with Biology, Maths and Chemistry as main subjects. The mode of admission is a relevant entrance examination carried out by different universities such as JEE Main, UPSEE, AIEEE and other State- level examinations. The average tuition fee charged in India for this course ranges between INR 3 to 6 Lacs annually.

Successful graduates of the course are hired by firms like Mazagon Dock Limited, Garden Reach Shipbuilders Engineers Ltd, Bharati Shipyard Ltd, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Shipping Corporation of India Ltd and Goa Shipyard Limited. They are hired in capacities such as Port Manager, Chief Marine Engineer, Technical Superintendent etc. Average starting salary offered to such graduates lies generally between INR 4 to 10 Lacs per year, which increases with experience in the field.

B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering: What Is It About

The course aims at preparing Naval Architects and Offshore Engineers to meet the growing demands of manpower in the industry by imparting academic and practical training on basic science subjects and common engineering subjects. The course typically covers Physics, Hydrodynamics, Chemistry and Ship Design.A degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering prepares professionals for 2 different but related careers in the realm of designing ships and the systems that allow ships to run, preparing graduates for employment in the Navy, in the private sector, or in positions involving supervision of other workers or positions involving computer- designed software.

Marine Engineers and Naval Architects wishing to become professional engineers must pass 2 exams conducted by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), and gain sufficient work experience. Students nearing graduation may take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. After passing the FE, individuals must work for 4 years before they are eligible to sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. The NCEES indicates that the PE is typically the last step to becoming professionally-  licensed engineers in the field.

A degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering could be pursued at a college or a marine service academy. Individuals employed in the field may design ships and the systems that allow ships to run efficiently. Licensure is required in order to become a professional engineer.
