About the Course

The 3 year BSc program in Hospitality & Hotel Administration with Specialisation (majors) is offered at select Institutes affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management. For 20013-14 batch the course will be offered at Chennai, Goa, Kolkata and Mumbai. . Admission to the program is same as that for 3-year BSc. ie. through All India Joint Entrance Examination-JEE,  in which the first three semesters are common to both the streams ie. Generic and Specialisation. In the forth semester, students who opt for specialisation are allotted their choice based on merit and marks scored by them in the semesters one and two.

Specialisation scheme:

There are three fields of specialisation offered in Semester IV, V and VI namely:

1.   Food Production Management.

2.   Food & Beverage Management.

3.   Accommodation Management.

Students of specialisation are to undergo fourteen weeks of Practicum or Industrial Training after each semester as under:

Practicum I: For four weeks after semester three in all the departments of a hotel;

Practicum II:  For six weeks after forth semester in department of specialisation; and

Practicum III: Four weeks after fifth semester in department of specialisation.

There is one elective each in semester five and six. From a list of 14 topics, students have to choose one elective in each semester. The program entails greater emphasis on self study, projects, guest lectures and research.

No inter-change of Specialisation:

While the first three semesters are common to the Generic and Specialisation stream of the three year BSc. program, limited seats are available for specialisation which is offered from the forth semester onwards. Once a stream is allocated, no change of specialisation stream is permitted thereafter.

Since most hotel vacancies arise in the core operational areas, students of specialisation stand to gain by way ease selection at the time of campus recruitment. Hotels look for specialised candidates or those having advanced knowledge and skills in areas like Food & Beverage (Restaurants and Banquets), Food Production (kitchens) and Accommodation Management (Rooms Division, Housekeeping and Front Office) which makes their job easier if students have already chosen their department of interest. Thus, hotel and restaurant jobs are guaranteed for students who undergo specialised training at our institutes.

As a result, the graduating students can look forward to career opportunities as;

Management Trainee in Hotel and allied hospitality industry;

Kitchen Management/Housekeeping Management positions in Hotels after initial stint as trainee;

Flight Kitchens and on-board flight services;

Indian Navy Hospitality services;

Guest/Customer Relation Executive in Hotel and other Service Sectors;

Management Trainee/Executive in international and national fast food chains;

Hospital and Institutional Catering;

About 80% of the graduates are employed by Hospitality and other service sectors through on-campus and off-campus recruitment processes.

Eligibility for Admission

Qualifying Examination :

A pass in 10+2 system of Senior Secondary examination or its equivalent with English as one of the subjects. Candidate must have passed English as a subject of study (core/elective/functional) in the qualifying examination. 
Those appearing in 10+2 or equivalent examination can also appear in JEE 2013 on provisional basis. Provisional admission will stand cancelled if proof of having passed the qualifying examination (10+2 or its equivalent) is not submitted at the time of counselling or at the time of admission or latest by 30-09-2013. 
The offer of admission is subject to verification of original certificates/documents at the time of admission.

Eligibility for Specialization :

Specialization degree is coordinated at 5 of its institutes located at Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

The candidates will write the All India Entrance Examination which is common for admission to both programmes.

For Specialization limited seats are available at each of the seven institutes and are offered based on performance in the 1st and 2nd semester examinations. Selection is based on merit-cum-choice.

Students can opt for any one of the three areas of Specialization viz. Food Production Management, Food & Beverage Management and Accommodation Operation Management.

While the first three semesters are common for all the students, specialization is offered from the 4th semester onwards. No change of stream of specialization can be made after allocation.

In order to become eligible for award of degree in B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration by IGNOU, students must complete the NGHMCT component as full time candidates in the affiliated Institutes of Hotel Management as well as clear the credit papers offered by IGNOU during the course of study.
