Bachelor of Design. If you are the creative sort and have always enjoyed the intricacies of designing and the aesthetics involved, then a Bachelor of Design may be the course suitable for you. However, the creative vocation can be challenging, and before you think of applying for this course, do read into the curriculum and the work involved and seriously consider whether this is the career you want for yourself. Once you’ve decided, the path ahead is fairly simple. As soon as you complete 10+2, you can look up the websites of the various design institutes in the country and start applying.
Since this is specialized degree, most institutes have eligibility tests in addition to minimum cut offs (usually 50% in Std 12) that help gauge the aptitude and skill of applicants. It’s generally a 4-year course, and includes an integrated internship. The course kicks off with foundation training that combines core studies in liberal arts, art appreciation, and traditional and cultural perspectives on history, with core skills such as life drawing, colour, and basic design. All good institutes emphasize on foundation courses, since most new students do not have too much background knowledge about the field. Once the foundations are built, students can choose to specialize in textile design, fashion design, graphic design, or any other specialization option offered by the institute. It is good to know a bit about the various specializations and opt for an institute that offers the specialization of your choice, instead of one that does not.
