Looking beyond CAT: Careers path for aspirants

PUBLISH DATE 13th January 2025

Every year, over 2.5 lakh aspirants register for the Common Admission Test (CAT), competing for just a few thousand seats at the top IIMs. With an acceptance rate of less than 2 per cent, CAT is one of the toughest exams. For those who do not crack, it might feel like the end of the road, however, the truth is far more optimistic: missing out on CAT can often lead to diverse and rewarding career opportunities.

Not the final destination

MBA programmes have long been considered a gateway for large companies to recruit smart and ambitious individuals. MBAs in India have always been about finding the top talent for large companies who then have their own structured management trainee programmes.

But today, roles and companies are changing and MBAs are not the only way to build a successful career. The skills required to excel are increasingly shifting toward domain expertise, creative problem-solving, and adaptability—qualities that can be developed outside an MBA classroom.

New roles and industries

Today’s job market is teeming with roles that did not even exist a decade ago. Digital marketing, data analytics, product management, and positions in a founder’s office are just a few examples of careers that reward tangible skills over traditional degrees.

Start-ups and even large organizations are open to hiring individuals who can prove their mettle through their work, regardless of whether they hold an MBA.

Digital Marketing: Social media strategists, performance marketers, and SEO specialists are in high demand. Practical experience, like running campaigns or managing a brand’s social presence, is more valuable than a degree.

Analytics and Data Science: With businesses relying on data-driven decisions, roles in analytics prioritize technical expertise over academic credentials.

Product Management: These roles demand an understanding of user behaviour and product design, skills that can be learned through actual work and projects

Sales and Business Driving roles: Sales roles have always been in demand and continue to be one of the best ways to build a high-growth and high-impact career.

In today’s connected world, career opportunities extend far beyond traditional job boards and campus placements. Here are some strategies to help you stand out:

Leverage social media to showcase your work

Recruiters are increasingly looking for candidates who can demonstrate their abilities through real-world work. Platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram are not just for networking; they’re also tools to showcase your portfolio.

For example, aspiring content creators with an active Instagram presence can show brands their ability to create engaging content; a designer could share case studies of their projects on Behance or Dribble. This direct approach often has more impact than a generic résumé.

Targeted outreach on LinkedIn

Instead of sending out mass applications, spend time understanding the company and its values. Follow senior professionals on LinkedIn and observe what they share.

For example, if a company emphasizes sustainability, you could mention your experience leading a local initiative to reduce plastic waste. By aligning your skills and experiences with the company’s vision, you create a compelling case for why you are a fit.

Build and nurture a network

Networking has never been easier. Join online communities, attend webinars, and connect with industry professionals. However, the key to effective networking is offering value.

For instance, if you are in digital marketing, help a contact optimize their campaign before requesting a referral.

Offer tailored audits or insights

Want to work for a particular company? Research their website, user experience, or advertising campaigns and offer detailed feedback. Whether it is a website audit or a critique of their communication strategy, this proactive approach showcases your initiative and skills.

Join high-growth teams or start your venture

You can consider joining a fast-paced start-up or starting your venture. Start-ups provide exposure to multiple functions and help you develop problem-solving skills quickly. Similarly, starting a small business teaches you real-world lessons in finance, marketing, and operations—skills that are invaluable for future roles.

The job market today values proof of work over paper qualifications. With access to online learning platforms, free resources, and opportunities to collaborate globally, you can master skills in virtually any domain. What matters is not where you learned but how well you apply what you have learned.

Consider this: companies like Tesla, Apple, and Google have de-emphasized degrees in their hiring criteria. According to a 2022 report by LinkedIn, 78% of hiring managers believe skills are more important than degrees in evaluating candidates. This trend is especially pronounced in fields like tech, design, and content creation, where portfolios often carry more weight than a CV.

A world of opportunities beyond CAT

Failing to crack CAT is not the end of your career aspirations—it is an opportunity to explore paths that align with your strengths and interests. With industries evolving and opportunities expanding, the key lies in taking charge of your journey.

By focusing on building skills, showcasing your work, and networking strategically, you can carve out a fulfilling career, MBA or not.

The road ahead is wide open—step onto it with confidence. Your dream career might just be a LinkedIn message, an Instagram post, or an audit away.
