11th Admission 2022: FYJC cut-off is likely high

PUBLISH DATE 19th June 2022

Colleges are predicting a rise in cut-off marks in the first round of admissions to the First Year Junior College (FYJC) in spite of a lower number of students scoring 90% and above scores in SSC (Std X) this year as compared to the previous year. College principals said the end of Covid-19 restrictions would help improve the movement of students to cities. Lesser number of students from the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions applying to colleges in cities due to Covid-19 curbs and resultant online classes were stated as the prime reasons for lower cut-off marks last year, despite a record pass percentage and high scores in Maharashtra. Hrishikesh Soman, prin-

cipal of Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce. said, “The cut-off percentages are expected to rise this year as students have scored very high marks. But we must also take into consideration a section of these high scorers opting for admission in polytechnics instead of Std XI. Students who are sure that they want to take up engineering and want to avoid the entire entrance examination setup, opt for polytechnic. This gives them a good foundatio- nal knowledge in engineering subjects instead of the fundamental physics or chemistry taught in Stds XI and XII. Scoring high marks in polytechnic also give them a good opportunity to get admission directly to the second year of engineering. So, the cut-off marks are expected to rise, but not very high. ” Medha Sinnarkar, principal of Laxmanrao Apte Prashala, which had the highest cut-off marks in the science stream across all junior colleges in Pune and PCMC areas last year, said she expected the cut-off marks to further rise this year. “The colleges will conduct their lectures offline. Hence, city colleges are expected to get a large number of students from the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions,” Sinnarkar said.
