WBJEE 2020: Over a lakh candidates appeared for the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE 2020) conducted on Sunday, February 2, 2020. The students rated the paper as moderate, with the question pattern following the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main).

Aishwarya Banerjee, a WBJEE aspirant, said the questions in Physics and Mathematics followed the standard of JEE Main, covering the whole syllabus. “I appeared for the JEE Main in January, and the questions in WBJEE were at par with that entrance examination. The questions in Physics especially followed the pattern of JEE Main, followed by Mathematics and Chemistry.”

Reiterating the same, teachers too said the state Joint Entrance (WBJEE) paper was at par with JEE Main. “This is the first time that the state joint entrance examination followed the pattern of JEE Main. In Physics, questions covered the entire syllabus. While in JEE Main, it covers 70 per cent of the syllabus, WBJEE covered the whole syllabus,” said Sandip Sanyal, Associate Professor, Physics, FIITJEE.

Students largely complained about the difficulty level of Maths, with most saying the paper was lengthy. “The Maths paper has lots of conceptual-based questions. Section C was a little bit tough and lengthy, as the questions were application-based,” said an aspirant, Ankush Banerjee.

Sarvjeet Kumar, a senior teacher at a coaching institute, said, “The students preparing for JEE Main would have easily solved the paper. Most questions came from the books followed by the state boards. At least 20 to 30 questions came from the plus two Maths books by SN Dey.”

The students who can give 50 to 55 answers correctly can be calculated as good attempts, Kumar said.

Like last year, the Chemistry paper was moderate. “The students can easily score around 35 to 40. The questions mainly came from Organic, Physical and Inorganic sections, and were quite standard,” said Debnath Mukherjee, Associate Professor, Chemistry.

Physics

Section A (30X1= 30)

The students found this section relatively easy with two to three questions being conceptual, teachers said.

Section B (5X2=10)

Teachers said only two questions in the paper remained conceptual while others were easy to attempt

Section C (5X2=10)

This section, according to teachers, was standard. All the questions were from chapters and based on the formula.

This year, the entrance examination is being conducted earlier on the directions of state governments to increase the number of students in state engineering colleges.

In 2019, a total of 22,175 seats went vacant, as compared with 16,000 in 2018. There are overall 32,700 seats on offer in various engineering colleges in West Bengal.
