Special Child Education: How Proactive Learning Environments And Flexibility In Education Can Benefit Special Children

PUBLISH DATE 7th April 2024

Special Child Education: While every child is entitled to a world-class education, reality bites differently. Excellence in education is only limited to a few for various reasons, including financial constraints, social and economic issues, access to quality education, and infrastructure issues. In fact, according to the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) 2021–22, around 3.5 per cent of children aged 6–13 were kept out of school, and many of them lacked access to alternative learning options. The situation is even more frightening for special children, who are frequently overlooked when it comes to unique learning requirements.

Children with disabilities or special children are those who suffer from long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments that affect their effective participation in society and realisation of their full potential. According to UNESCO, India is home to 78 lakh children with disabilities, and three-fourths of those aged 5 years fail to attain literacy. As we all know, 90 per cent of brain development takes place by the age of 5. Thus, the role of accessible education from an early age is immense. By ensuring that education is accessible to everyone, modern schools can bridge the gap and create the future of tomorrow.

Accessible education: An understanding

Living in an era where change is constant, accessibility in education has acquired enormous traction. Today, it appears to be a significant aspect of teaching and learning that recognises and accommodates varied requirements. It goes beyond physical access to the facility and includes all components of the educational system. For instance, think about a blackboard in a classroom, and if you feel that allowing every child equal access guarantees equal opportunity, you need to rethink it, as it might not be true. However, while the blackboard can be accessible to some children, it cannot serve those who are visually and physically impaired. Thus, educational institutions must work on their infrastructure and their offerings to cater to the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

Ajay Gupta, Founder and CEO of Bachpan Play School, discusses strategies for enhancing accessibility and inclusivity within the education system.

Here are the key points:

Proactive learning environment: In an era where people of different cultures, backgrounds, and ethnicities coexist, it is critical to use a variety of teaching methods and resources to meet particular requirements. Individualised education plans customised to particular needs and talents are one method to make the education system more accessible and inclusive for these students. For example, educational institutions can utilise ramps and platforms to elevate students with impairments sufficiently to write on the blackboard; nevertheless, the chalkboard's height should be reduced.

Flexibility in education: Accessible and inclusive education calls for flexibility in teaching methods to cater to learning needs and abilities. As a result, to guarantee that special children can fully participate in educational opportunities, this may entail individualised learning plans, assistive technologies, and other support services.

Continuous training: There is no getting around the fact that education is always changing, particularly in terms of meeting the requirements of children with special needs. Thus, to make education accessible to all, educational institutions must provide continual training on inclusive teaching practices and accessible curriculum design. They need to restructure the educational system to better serve neurotypical and “special children." This should be a continuous effort rather than a one-time event.

Accessible education: Paving the way for inclusivity and equal opportunities

Regardless of their disabilities, making education accessible to all is important to offer students the same opportunities and learning experiences. To ensure the same, one has to focus on implementing the key elements of accessibility mentioned above. Therefore, by making accessibility a top priority in education, institutions can give all students—especially those with special needs—a more equal and powerful educational experience.

In addition, making education accessible for special children helps to promote self-reliance in the yet “marginalised” section of society. Furthermore, it also aids in promoting empathy and understanding in the “mainstream” section of our society, paving the way for inclusivity and equal opportunities.
