PUBLISH DATE 4th June 2025

Online Application Process for Class VI Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) 2026

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational residential schools established by the Government of India under the National Policy of Education (1986). These schools are fully financed and administered by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organisation under the Government of India. Admissions in JNVs are conducted through the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST). Currently, 654 JNVs are operational across 27 States and 8 Union Territories. Education in JNVs is free, including board, lodging, uniform, and textbooks. A monthly sum of Rs. 600 is collected from students of Classes IX to XII towards Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN), with exemptions for SC/ST categories, Divyang students, all-girl students, and students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for JNVST 2026, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • District-Specific Admission: A candidate studying Class V in a particular district is only allowed to apply for admission to a JNV in that same district. Only bonafide residents of the district where the JNV is located and who are studying Class V in that district are eligible.
  • Residential Proof: A valid residential proof of the parent from the same district where the candidate studied Class V and appeared for JNVST must be submitted at admission.
  • Schooling: Candidates must study Class V for the entire academic session 2025-26 in a Government, Government-aided, or other recognised school in the same district where admission is sought.
  • NIOS Candidates: Candidates undertaking the 'B' certificate competency course of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are also eligible if they pass the course by September 15, 2025, and are within the prescribed age group. They must also be bonafide residents of the district where they are seeking admission.
  • Age Limit: Candidates must have been born between May 1, 2014, and July 31, 2016 (both dates inclusive).
  • No Repeat Candidates: Candidates who have passed Class V before the 2025-26 session or have appeared for the JNVST previously are not eligible.
  • Aadhaar Requirement: Candidates are required to furnish proof of possession of an Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar authentication. If a candidate does not have an Aadhaar number, they must apply for Aadhaar enrolment with parental consent before registration. Provisional registration is allowed by uploading a parent's residence certificate, but an Aadhaar card copy must be submitted at the time of the selection test and admission.
  • Rural/Urban Status:
    • Rural: Candidates applying under the rural quota must have studied Classes III, IV, and V in Government/Government Aided/Government recognized schools located in rural areas for the full academic session. For NIOS candidates, rural status is determined by the parent/candidate's residence location.
    • Urban: A candidate who has studied in a school located in an urban area for even a single day in Classes III, IV, or V will be considered an urban candidate.
