The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will offer internships to final year Civil Engineering students from NITs, IITs, government and private engineering colleges for various projects of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
To avail the internships, students can apply on the AUCTE internship portal by July 15, 2022.
BTech students with a minimum of 7 CGPA will get a monthly stipend of Rs 10,000, while students doing MTech will get Rs 15,000.
MP Poonia, vice-chairman, AICTE, says, “The internships will give first-hand exposure to infrastructure development in India. Interns will work in various domains. ” He adds that a sixmonth-long internship would help students earn 18 credits. One credit would require them to put in 30 hours of practical training.
Internships were made compulsory in the Engineering curriculum in 2017. Currently, 50,000 industries are associated with AICTE to provide internships. In
this year's budget the union government announced increasing internships to align students with the industry’s emerging needs.
“At present, we have made it mandatory for institutes to collaborate with atleast five companies. This will help acquire internships and get an extension from AICTE,” says Poonia.
We have even tied up with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) which will provide internships to 20,000 students, further adds Poonia.
AM Rawani, director, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Raipur, says, “Engineers’ employability has been low due to the gap between knowledge imparted to students and skills they acquire. Internships will change this. ”
In 2019, we announced a mandatory semester-long internship for students.
“NHAI will review our curriculum and also suggest modifications in keeping with the emerging realities in the domains. Our faculty and scholars will visit NHAI sites and would also suggest possible improvements in road conditions,” adds Rawani.
