In one of its kind, IIT Madras has introduced a course in BSc in Programming and Data Science for students from all backgrounds including humanities and commerce.
The main feature of the course is that this is the only bachelor's degree from an IIT that does not require JEE.
The BSc programme comes with a 4-year BS degree option. After the completion of the programme, the students will be awarded different recognitions (certificate/ diploma(s)/degree) based on the level of their success. The course offers multiple exit options. A student will be awarded with a certificate after completion of foundation level, diploma(s) after completion of additional courses and projects, BSc degree after completion of additional electives, and a BS degree after completion of specialised electives/apprenticeship. Students who complete the 4-year BS can appear for GATE and pursue an MTech.
“The programme introduces concepts from a very fundamental (high-school) level. This ensures that students who have not studied Math and Science in classes XI and XII can also earn a degree from IIT Madras. This is the reason we have listed the eligibility for the programme as Math and English in Class X. The course can be pursued along with another degree or while working,” explains Vignesh Muthuvijayan, professor in-charge, BS in Data Science and Applications, IIT Madras.
Citing the high demand of jobs in programming and data science, he adds, “Students who complete this degree will be highly sought after by the industry. Estimates show that there will be more than 11 million jobs in this domain by the year 2026. The curriculum is designed with industry needs in mind. So, it is a state-of-theart programme that is extremely attractive to various companies. ”
The programme offers ex-
tensive job-oriented handson training through multiple projects and internships. Students also have the opportunity to take up an apprentices- hip in an industry or research lab while studying in them final year.
Admission process
Admission is through an inclusive qualifier process. Students are trained by IIT Madras for 4 weeks to appear for a qualifier exam. All students who qualify with a minimum cut-off are admitted. The institute also offers up to 75% scholarships for students based on their family income.
Mode of teaching
A blended learning model, with recorded video lectures, live online interactions, hands-on training, and in-person evaluations is used for teaching the students. Students can pursue this degree along with an on-campus degree or while working.
Students can also apply from anywhere in the world as exams are conducted at various centers.
The last date to apply for the September 2022 term of this Data Science Program is 19 August 2022.
