New Delhi: In a bold move to instill environmental consciousness among the youth, the Delhi Government on Thursday launched a transformative campaign aimed at creating a generation of "eco-warriors." This eco-sensitisation initiative will engage two lakh students across nearly 2,000 schools and colleges in Delhi-NCR, encouraging active participation in climate action, biodiversity conservation, and sustainability education.
The programme is being implemented in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a globally acclaimed think tank known for its work in sustainable development. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between TERI and the Department of Environment, Government of NCT of Delhi, marking the beginning of the project.
The government will allocate ₹40 lakh to TERI for the successful rollout of the initiative. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who spearheaded the launch, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond raising awareness. “This is not just an awareness campaign – it is a transformational behaviour change initiative,” he stated. “We will create two lakh eco-warriors who will protect and promote Delhi’s biodiversity and ecosystem.”
Student Eco-Leaders at the Heart of the Campaign
A central element of the campaign is the training of 80 "paryavaran sanrakshaks" — a selected group of students and educators who will serve as eco-leaders within their institutions. These individuals will undergo capacity-building training and act as peer mentors, creating a multiplying effect by inspiring and educating others in their schools and communities.
The programme, scheduled from June to November 2025, will feature a series of engaging activities including storytelling sessions, hands-on environmental actions, educational games, and creative communication tools. These are designed not only to inform but also to embed sustainability into the daily lives of young citizens.
Towards Participatory Environmental Governance
Environment Minister Sirsa also highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the broader vision of sustainable development. “Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, we are investing in people’s participation, not just policy enforcement,” he noted. “This drive reflects our belief in inclusive environmental governance.”
As part of Delhi's wider climate strategy — which includes electric vehicle policies and pollution control reforms — this youth-led campaign represents a vital step in cultivating long-term climate responsibility. By placing students at the forefront, Delhi is nurturing a generation ready to protect the planet.
