Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has started a free online Sanskrit summer school for the lovers of the ancient language.
With an aim to provide knowledge of different disciplines of Sanskrit tradition such as law, philosophy, Vedanta, poetics, and grammar, as many as nine short courses of 15-20 hours of duration are being offered to the participants to choose from.
“Soon, we are going to launch an online degree programmes in Sanskrit language and literature which will include computational linguistics to widen our reach to the students from across the country and abroad.
The courses are being taught by the faculty from the university’s School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. The disciplines that will be taught as part of the online summer school include Sanskrit legal system, Buddhist Pali text, Advaita Vedanta system, Kashmir Shaivism, texts from Mahabharata, Advaita perspective on the Vidyasthanas, Sanskrit Poetics, Sanskrit Grammar and Nyaya Vaise?ika Philosophy.
The online classes for each course are conducted twice a week from June 5-30, 2020, wherein the course in-charge teaches the text line by line. At the end of the course, the participants will get a participation certificate if they maintain a minimum of 70% attendance.
“There is increased interest in learning Sanskrit across the world. Many schools in the UK are teaching Sanskrit. Besides, well-known universities including Cambridge, Harvard and Trinity College are teaching Sanskrit. In Germany, children can choose Sanskrit as an optional subject. With newer technologies such as artificial intelligence becoming popular, learning Sanskrit can provide the learners with an important knowledge base and skillset. Therefore, teaching and popularising Sanskrit language and literature is very important,” adds Kumar.
