JEE Main 2020: HRD secretary R. Subrahmanyam said that as the JEE Main is conducted online so there are some technical limitation in conducting the examination in all the regional languages.
JEE Main 2020: On the lines of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the government is planning to conduct the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) in multiple languages. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is in consultation with the entrance exam body, National Testing Agency (NTA), to conduct the entrance exam in all the 22 regional languages.
HRD secretary R Subrahmanyam said unlike NEET which is offline, the JEE Main is computer-based test and therefore, there are some technical limitations. “Since JEE Main is computer-based test, there are some limitations which need to be addressed first. We are committed to conducting JEE Main in multiple languages and the process will take time,” Subrahmanyam said, adding that there is no plan to withdraw Gujarati from 2021.
Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) in its release on Thursday clarified that the translation of JEE (Main) question paper in Gujarati language continued on the request of Gujarat State. None of the other States have approached NTA to provide the JEE (Main) question paper in any other Indian National Language.
The JEE (Main) Examination started in 2013 with the idea of all States admitting their Engineering candidates through JEE (Main). The request was sent to all the States in the year 2013 itself. Only the Gujarat State agreed to admit their candidates in State Engineering Colleges of Gujarat through JEE (Main) and requested that the JEE (Main) paper be made available in Gujarati language, read the release.
Further, in 2014 Maharashtra State also opted for admitting the Engineering candidates in the State Engineering Colleges through JEE (Main). The Maharashtra State requested to provide the question paper in the language of Marathi and Urdu, the release mentioned.
However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today accused the Cente of discriminating between languages in respect of medium of JEE Main. “Centre should have sought proposals from states before selecting regional languages as medium of JEE, ” Mamata told reporters.
She further said the entrance exam held for admission in prestigious engineering colleges should also be held in Bengali. “I don’t have any problem with JEE Main being conducted in Gujarati. Our Education Minister had also written to National Testing Agency (NTA) on this issue to conduct the test in Bengali,” she said.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Banerjee questioned the government’s decision to include Gujarati as a medium for the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains). “I love Gujarati language. But, why have other regional languages been ignored? Why injustice is being meted out to them? If Gujarati has to be there, then all regional languages, including Bengali must be there. Unless the issue was decided gracefully, there would be strong protests all around as sentiments of people who speak other regional languages would be deeply hurt due to this injustice,” Mamata Banerjee tweeted.
The state has also written a letter to the MHRD on Wednesday demanding inclusion of Bengali as a medium of JEE Main. “On the instructions of CM Mamata Banerjee, the education department has written a letter to MHRD regarding the introduction of Bengali as a medium to appear for JEE Main,” the official said.
As per the JEE 2020 notification, the question papers will be set in English and Hindi, but for the centre cities in Gujarati, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the languages would be English, Hindi and Gujarati.
The Central Board of Secondary Education which earlier conducted the JEE Main included Marathi, Gujarati and Urdu languages in 2014, but withdraw Urdu and Marathi in 2016.
NTA conducts JEE Main twice in a year. The entrance exam will be held from January 6-11, while the April exams will be held from April 9 to 13, 2020.
