PUBLISH DATE 30th April 2024

If you're aspiring to join one of India's prestigious technical institutes such as the IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, or other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), it's crucial to understand the eligibility criteria and the entrance examinations required for admission. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process:

1. IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology)

  • Entrance Exam: JEE Advanced
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • JEE Main Qualification: Candidates must first qualify in the JEE Main examination and rank among the top 2,50,000 candidates (including all categories) to be eligible for JEE Advanced.
    • Educational Qualification: Applicants must have completed their 12th standard or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
    • Minimum Marks Requirement: A minimum of 75% marks in the 12th standard (or 65% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) is required, or candidates should be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards.
    • Age Limit: General category candidates should be born on or after October 1, 1999. There is a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
    • Attempt Limit: Candidates are allowed a maximum of two attempts for JEE Advanced, which must be taken in two consecutive years.

2. NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIEST (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology), and IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology)

  • Entrance Exam: JEE Main
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed their 12th standard or an equivalent examination in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
    • Minimum Marks Requirement: For admission to NITs, IIEST, and IIITs, candidates must secure at least 75% marks in the 12th standard (or 65% for SC/ST candidates) or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards.
    • Age Limit: General category candidates should be born on or after October 1, 1999, with a 5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
    • Attempt Limit: Candidates can attempt JEE Main a maximum of three times.

3. GFTIs (Other Government Funded Technical Institutes)

  • Entrance Exam: JEE Main
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Educational Qualification: The requirements are similar to those for NITs and IIITs. Candidates must have completed their 12th standard or an equivalent examination in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
    • Minimum Marks Requirement: The minimum percentage required is generally the same as for NITs and IIITs—75% marks in the 12th standard (or 65% for SC/ST candidates) or being in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards.
    • Age Limit and Attempt Limit: The age and attempt limits are the same as those for NITs and IIITs.

Additional Requirements for All Institutes

  • Nationality: Indian nationals and OCI/PIO cardholders are eligible for admission. Foreign nationals may also apply but under a different set of criteria.
  • Physical Fitness: Certain institutes may have specific physical fitness requirements that candidates must meet.

Understanding these eligibility criteria is the first step toward securing a seat in one of these prestigious institutions. It's essential to prepare thoroughly for the entrance exams and ensure that all academic and age-related requirements are met. For further details on the admission process or specific queries related to each institute, prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the official websites or consult the relevant authorities.
