UGC Allows Use Of NET Scores For PhD Admissions

PUBLISH DATE 28th March 2024

In a public notice released on Wednesday, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that students can now utilise their NET scores for admission to Ph.D. programmes, replacing the entrance tests conducted by various universities and higher education institutions (HEIs).

UGC Secretary Prof. Manish R Joshi informed that, in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), an expert committee was formed to review the National Eligibility Test (NET) provisions, aiming to streamline Ph.D. admissions with a single national entrance test for students' benefit.

Following the committee's recommendations in a meeting convened on March 13, 2024, it was determined that commencing from the academic year 2024-2025, students would be permitted to utilise their NET scores for Ph.D. program admissions, thereby replacing the entrance tests administered by various universities and HEIs.

NET candidates will be declared eligible in the following three categories:

- Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. with JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor

- Eligible for (i) admission to Ph.D. without JRF and (ii) appointment as Assistant Professor

- Eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme only and not for the award of JRF or appointment as Assistant Professor

According to the public notice, NET scores will be presented in percentile alongside the candidate's marks to facilitate their utilisation for Ph.D. admission. Moreover, the UGC specified that candidates qualifying in categories 2 and 3 will undergo a weighting system, with 70 per cent weightage allocated to test scores and 30 per cent to the interview. Admission to Ph.D. programs will be based on the combined merit of NET marks and interview/viva voce performance. The NET marks obtained by candidates in Categories 2 and 3 will remain valid for one year for Ph.D. admission purposes.
