MUMBAI: NEET-UG registration has crossed 25 lakh for the first time, 4.2 lakh more than last year. While Saturday was the last day of registration for the May 5 medical entrance examination, National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET-UG-2024) being conducted by National Testing Agency, a large number of students were still applying until late in the evening.
"Even on the last day [Saturday], a large number of students are getting registered and are also demanding extension of the last date as several aspirants could not apply due to lack of Aadhaar card and mobile link. Some are not able to get OTP as their old number is linked to their Aadhaar card. Also, the other option is PAN card but that too is not available to many students," said Allen Career Institute's career counselling expert Parijat Mishra said.
Over 13 lakh applications have been made by women candidates for about 2 lakh seats, including 1.09 lakh MBBS, 26,000 dental, along with Unani, Homeopathy, Veterinary, Ayurveda and nursing seats.
One of the highest paying fields in India, the national average salary of an MBBS doctor in India is currently Rs 9-10 lakh per annum. "Doctors with postgraduate specialisation can expect better salaries. Income and social prestige increase further after higher degrees in super specialty subjects," said Kuldeep Tyagi of Pace medical academy.
Tyagi said job security is another reason most talented candidates want to become doctors. Doctor-patient ratio in India is 1:834. India still needs 5 lakh more doctors to meet standards of World Health Organization.
Medical tourism is also an emerging dimension in India in which patients from foreign countries come to India for their treatment, stressing the need for good doctors.
