NIRF Rankings 2024: The Ministry of Education is set to announce the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 today, August 12, at 3 pm. The rankings evaluate and rank higher education institutions in India based on various criteria. Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Education Minister, will hold a press conference to unveil this year’s rankings. The NIRF Rankings 2024 will be published shortly after the press conference at nirfindia.org.
The rankings will feature the top colleges across a range of categories, including Engineering, Medical, Management, Dental, Pharmacy, Law, and others.
Institutions are evaluated based on several factors, including teaching and learning, research and professional practice, graduation results, outreach and inclusion, and perception. Each criterion is assigned a specific weight to reflect its importance. Teaching and learning, as well as research and professional practice, each account for 30 per cent of the total weight. Graduation results contribute 20 per cent, while outreach, inclusion, and perception make up 10 per cent of the overall weight.
Last year, IIT Madras secured the top position in the ‘Overall’ category, with IISc Bengaluru and IIT Delhi following. In the ‘Universities’ category, IISc Bengaluru was ranked first, followed by JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia. Miranda House led the ‘Colleges’ category, while AIIMS Delhi topped the ‘Medical’ category.
Among the top 100 higher education institutions (HEIs) in the ‘Overall’ category of the 2023 NIRF rankings, there are seven central universities, twenty-four deemed-to-be universities, seven private universities, twenty-six state universities, and thirty-six Institutions of National Importance (INIs) such as IITs and NITs.
Although the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a valuable tool for assessing the performance of educational institutions, UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has noted that these rankings do not influence a university’s funding or other regulatory matters.
