CBSE Board Exam

PUBLISH DATE 1st February 2024

CBSE Board Exam:  The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed notable modifications to the academic structure for classes 10 and 12. One of the changes that have been suggested is that students in Class 10 would now study three languages instead of two, along with the requirement that at least two of these languages be native to India, according to a report in The Indian Express.

Moreover, the passing standards for Class 10 students would now require them to pass exams in ten subjects instead of five. Similarly, for Class 12, the proposed changes would require students to study two languages instead of one, with the requirement that at least one of the languages be a native language of India. Ultimately, students would need to pass exams in six subjects instead of five in order to complete high school.

According to The Indian Express report, the proposed modifications are an essential part of the CBSE's broader endeavor to implement a national credit framework in school education. The National Education Policy 2020 outlines the goal of this framework, which is to establish academic parity between general and vocational education in order to facilitate smooth shifts between the two educational systems.

In order to carry out this initiative, the Board has recommended adding more subjects to the curricula of secondary and upper school education. Vocational and transdisciplinary courses have been added to the current list of subjects; for example, in Class 10, students would be required to pass 10 subjects (seven major topics and three languages) rather than the current five subjects (two languages and three important subjects, such as math, science, and social studies).

The outlet lists seven essential subjects for Class 10, including math and computational thinking, social science, science, art education, physical education and well-being, vocational education, and environmental education. Of the three languages required, two should be native to India.

For Classes 11 and 12, in place of the current five subjects (one language and four electives), students would have to study six subjects (two languages and four subjects plus an optional fifth subject if desired), with one of the two languages having to be the native language of India.

According to the media reports, by December 5, 2023, all heads of CBSE-affiliated schools were asked to assess and provide feedback on the plan that suggested modifications to the academic framework of Classes 9, 10, 11, and 12.
