As of August 2023, investments in India reached $5.2 billion, marking an 18% increase from the previous month and a 127% increase from the same period in 2022, according to the IVCA-EY monthly PE/VC report.¹Moreover, India consistently maintains its position among the top five global markets for venture capital funding activity. Some key takeaways from CY23
As per PWC's findings, the deal count in Q3 CY23 showed a sequential decline from CY23, with a 7% decrease in total announced deals. Although this is a slowdown, it is notably less severe than the 15% decrease observed in the previous quarter. Despite the overall dip, the total disclosed deal value experienced a notable upswing, recording a 40% increase compared to the preceding quarter. Furthermore, private equity (PE) volume have continued to outpace merger and acquisition (M&A) deals.
The Indian startup ecosystem demonstrated resilience and vigour in Q3 2023, securing approximately USD 1.9 billion across 127 funding rounds. The average ticket size per deal stood at USD 15 million, with growth and late-stage deals contributing significantly, making up approximately 86% of the total funding amount.
The top five sectors that garnered the most investments were SaaS, LogiTech and AutoTech, e-commerce B2C, FinTech, and D2C. This trend reflects the escalating demand for digital solutions and services in the post-pandemic era.²
During the initial nine months of 2023 (January-September), internet-specific and computer software companies remained the primary focus of private equity (PE) investors, attracting a substantial investment of USD 2.80 billion and USD 1.48 billion, respectively.
In terms of industry sectors, PE investment in areas related to industrial/energy experienced a notable uptick, registering a growth of 30.8%. Similarly, the semiconductor and electrical sector saw a significant surge with a remarkable increase of 64.2%.
However, despite these sector-specific increases, the overall PE-VC investment figures for the first nine months of 2023 amounted to $23.6 billion across 542 deals. This reflects a 38% decrease compared to the corresponding period in 2022.³
