The decision was taken by the university’s board of examinations in a meeting held on December 26. The re-exam is scheduled on January 14.
In a rarest of rare instance, the Mumbai University has decided to hold a re-exam for distributing wrong question papers to M Sc students for the exam held on December 13.
In several centres, regular M Sc (Physics) students were given question papers in old syllabus, while repeaters were given question paper in new syllabus. Regular students had alleged that almost 50% of their 60-mark paper on ‘Statistical Mechanics’ had questions from old syllabus. Hundreds of students will be affected by the decision.
It was also decided students can retain the better scores from the two exams they have appeared.
An M Sc (Physics) student said that holding a re-exam is unfair as many of us will not be in the right frame of mind. “There was a mismatch in the subject code mentioned on the paper and in our hall-ticket. Some even brought it to the notice of the authorities,” said the student. Senate member Pradeep Sawant said that he would raise the issue in the management council meeting. “This kind of mismatch is sheer negligence on the part of the authorities. Holding a re-exam is not a favourable decision for students. They could probably give them marks for the incorrect questions,” said Sawant.
