University of Hong Kong vs National University of Singapore

PUBLISH DATE 24th December 2024

Alexander Fleming had accidentally discovered the antibiotic penicillin, from a contaminated petri dish he had already discarded, which revolutionized medicine. This is merely one example of how essential the field of Biological Sciences is, in order to understand the intricacies of living organisms and ecosystems.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) are both leading institutions in this realm, renowned for their academic rigor and research contributions. Today, we set out to explore and compare these two esteemed institutions, both celebrated for their outstanding Biological Sciences programs, and uncover the unique characteristics that set these universities apart.

Both HKU and NUS have made significant contributions to the field of Biological Sciences. Notably, NUS has had connections with Nobel Prize winners like Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, who joined its faculty in 2019. In the latest QS World University Rankings for Asia 2025, HKU ranks 2nd while NUS holds the 3rd position, highlighting their strong competitive standing in academia.

Course structure and curriculum

University of Hong Kong offers a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences, and the curriculum includes core modules such as Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology, and Biochemistry. Students also engage in hands-on laboratory work and research projects. The programme emphasises interdisciplinary approaches, which allows them the opportunity to expand their knowledge in other disciplines. It also offers elective courses that allow students to tailor their education according to their individual interests.

National University of Singapore through the department of Biological Sciences, offers a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Life Sciences. NUS provides a comprehensive curriculum covering fundamental topics like Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Physiology. The programme also includes practical lab sessions and a capstone project that encourages independent research. Students are able to choose from various electives that enhance their learning experience.

Scholarships and financial assistance

HKU provides several scholarships, such as the HKU Entrance Scholarships for Outstanding Students, HKU Entrance Scholarships for Students with Indian Board Examinations, HKU Scholarships for Future Leaders and various others. HKU also provides financial assistance such as HKUFresh$3000, Main Exercise Application, for the students.

NUS offers various scholarships including the NUS Global Merit Scholarship, which covers tuition fees for exceptional international students. The university also has financial aid programmes such as NUS Donated Bursaries and Work Study Assistance available for students from low-income backgrounds.

Admission process and requirements

HKU requires applicants to have completed secondary education with an overall average of 85 per cent or above. The application process includes submission of pass certificates obtained of class 10 and 12 for Indian state and national boards. Applications typically open in October and close by early January, and the early round applications close by mid November.

NUS requires a good pass in five subjects including English. For Indian state and other boards, additional requirements such as ACT with Writing, SAT scores or equivalent qualifications must be submitted. The applications generally open mid November and close by late February.

Extracurricular activities

At HKU, students can join clubs like the Biological Sciences Society, the Archery Club, or the Chess and Board Games Club. Unique clubs such as the Chong Yuet Ming Cultural Centre, promote engagement with the broader community.

NUS boasts a diverse range of student organisations including the Life Sciences Society (LSS), Food Science and Technology (FST) Society, American Sciences Society, and many others that promote learning beyond the classroom.

Research opportunities

HKU boosts undergraduate research through programmes like the Undergraduate Research Fellowship Scheme, allowing students to work alongside faculty on innovative projects related to biological sciences.
At NUS, students can participate in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP), which pairs them with faculty mentors on cutting-edge research projects across various disciplines.

Tropical places such as Hong Kong and Singapore have very rich ecosystems. Hence, there is a large scope for practical exposure to projects involving coral replantation, discovery of new species of bees etc.

In conclusion, when considering universities for a degree in Biological Sciences, finding the right college fit is key. While both universities offer exceptional programmes with strong support systems for students, applicants should consider how each institution aligns with their career aspirations and personal values in order to make an informed decision.

Whether you prefer HKU’s rich cultural backdrop or NUS’s dynamic campus life, both institutions promise a fulfilling academic experience.
