New Zealand PM launches new initiative to help Indian students study abroad

During his visit to India, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon highlighted the importance of fostering academic and cultural exchanges between the two nations. Building on this momentum, the Land of the Long White Cloud has launched the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) 2025, offering Indian students a unique opportunity to pursue world-class education in one of the most sustainable and peaceful countries in the world.
With 29 scholarships available across eight top-ranked universities, this initiative underscores New Zealand’s commitment to providing Indian students with global opportunities. The application process opened today, March 18, 2025, and the submission deadline is April 30, 2025.

What are the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA)?

The New Zealand Excellence Awards 2025 is a joint initiative by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao and the country’s eight leading universities. The program offers 29 scholarships to Indian students, covering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The scholarships range from NZD 5,000 to NZD 20,000, significantly reducing the financial burden of studying abroad.

Who can apply?

This scholarship offers Indian students a valuable opportunity to pursue their academic goals in New Zealand, provided they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Applicants must be Indian citizens (not a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia).
  • Applicants must meet Immigration New Zealand’s student visa requirements.
  • Applicants must reside in India at the time of application.
  • Applicants must hold an unconditional offer for an eligible course.

How to apply?

Students who meet the mentioned eligibility criteria can submit their applications for the scholarship by following the steps as given here:
Step 1. Explore programs and universities at studywithnewzealand.govt.nz.
Step 2. Submit your application directly to the university or through authorized agents.
Step 3. Apply for a student visa at immigration.govt.nz.
Step 4. Apply for NZEA 2025 before the 30 April 2025 deadline.
Step 4. Choose your preferred living arrangement.
Step 5. Learn about life in New Zealand and plan your adventures.

The NZEA is applicable for select 8 universities in the New Zealand, interested students can check the universities and their specialisation as given here:

  • Auckland University of Technology (AUT) – Ranked in the top 1% globally, AUT is known for its innovative teaching methods and strong industry links.
  • University of Auckland – Ranked 65th globally, this university leads in sustainability and research excellence.
  • Lincoln University – Specializes in agriculture, environmental management, and viticulture, with a strong focus on sustainability.
  • Massey University – Offers programs across three campuses, with strengths in agriculture, design, and veterinary sciences.
  • University of Waikato – Known for its future-focused education and triple-crown accredited management school.
  • University of Otago – New Zealand’s first university, renowned for its research and vibrant student community.
  • Victoria University of Wellington – Located in the capital city, it excels in creativity, government, and sustainability studies.
  • University of Canterbury – A leader in engineering, science, and business, with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning.

Work and life in New Zealand

One of the most attractive aspects of studying in New Zealand is the opportunity to work while studying. Students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during holidays. After graduation, students are eligible for a 3-year post-study work visa, allowing them to gain valuable international work experience.
The minimum wage in New Zealand will increase to NZD 23.50 per hour starting in April 2025, ensuring that students can support themselves financially while studying. Additionally, New Zealand’s stunning landscapes, outdoor adventures, and vibrant culture make it an ideal place to live, study, and explore.
