The surge in demand for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses in the US and UK can be attributed to several key factors, including the growing need for skilled professionals in STEM-related industries, the provision of post-study work visas, and government initiatives promoting STEM education. As the world becomes increasingly technologically advanced, the interest in STEM fields has grown exponentially. Both the US and the UK recognise the significance of fostering STEM education to prepare students for future job markets and address the growing demand for specialised skills. Demographics of Students Interested in STEM Courses
Insights into the demographics of students showing the most interest in STEM courses in the US reflect India's dominance in pursuing these courses abroad. According to an Open Doors report, in 2020-21 academic year, Indian students accounted for an impressive 14.9 per cent of all international students in the US. Despite the pandemic-inflicted decline in the number of students from other countries, India experienced a relatively minor decrease of only 5.9 per cent.
As per Career Mosaic’s data, since January 2022, the demand for STEM courses continues to be strong, with a notable preference for Master of Science programs, garnering 89,810 applications, followed by MBA and Masters of Engineering. These trends point to the significant interest from Asian students.
International Recognition and Reputation of STEM Degrees
STEM degrees from US universities hold strong international recognition, making graduates highly sought after by global employers and research institutions. Extensive alumni networks and access to cutting-edge research facilities provide valuable advantages in the global job market. The US educational system offers diverse STEM programs to meet students' evolving demands. UK universities also excel in various STEM subjects, as per QS World University Rankings 2022.
Availability and Accessibility of STEM Courses
Both countries emphasize practical skills and research-based learning in their STEM curricula. The US education system places significant emphasis on project-based approaches, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among students. In contrast, the UK's STEM curriculum leans towards a strong theoretical foundation, equipping students with in-depth subject knowledge. Ultimately, the choice between the US and the UK for STEM education depends on individual preferences, learning styles, and career goals, with both countries offering excellent opportunities for aspiring professionals.
