PUBLISH DATE 14th April 2020

Students who have been preparing for the competitive exams and had to appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains and Advanced) and National Eligibility-cum-Entrance test (NEET), are in dilemma after the extension of lockdown till May 17.

Earlier due to Covid-19 pandemic, the JEE (Mains) exam that was scheduled to be held on April 5 was postponed. While, the JEE (Advanced) exam that was scheduled for May 17 has also been postponed and will be rescheduled after the JEE (Mains) exam. Also, the NEET exam for medical aspirants that was scheduled to be held on May 3 has been postponed.

With uncertainty in exam dates, the engineering and medical aspirants are worried and concerned about how to take forward their preparation for the entrance exams that were scheduled to be held this year.During such trying times, online coaching has emerged as a saviour for these students preparing for national competitive exams.

“Students need to stop worrying about the exam dates and keep the momentum going. We have advised students, who had completed the entire syllabus, to attempt regular tests and revise their notes time to time. They can participate in online test series. While those students, whose preparation was incomplete, have been advised to focus on chapter wise preparation and attempt part tests. They can attend crash courses, which cover chapter wise important topics. Later, they can take to full syllabus tests,” said Tejpreet Singh, co-founder and COO, Edusquare, a private coaching institute.

If you are someone who is preparing for competitive exam then here are a few tips you can consider:

Effective preparation as per latest syllabus

To begin with, students must have complete knowledge of syllabus and exam pattern. While preparing for boards, students would have already built a conceptual understanding of topics, and should now utilise them for extensive practice of questions. You can find study material from the internet.

Attempt regular mock tests

To test and analyse preparation, students can take regular online mock tests to know their strengths and weaknesses. Mock tests play an important role in making familiar with strong and weak areas. Hence you will be able to manage your time effectively during the exam.

Time management and pattern of solving questions

Firstly, do not let the lockdown affect your sleep cycle. Choose a time to study that works well for you. Secondly, one of the crucial aspects of any competitive exam is the time management while answering, if one perfectly manages his/ her time from the start, the chances of acing the exam are highly increased. This management of time and pattern can only be achieved by serious dedicated practice and questions solving.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Don’t undermine your health amidst all the stress. You must take short breaks during your study hours. It will help your mind to relax and focus better. Maintain a healthy lifestyle and get at least 6-7 hours of sleep every day.

Keep away from fake news

Amidst all the panic, there are rounds of fake news that go about which can give you additional stress. So always check official websites for news and updates regarding the exams.

Another way to prepare for the examinations which is also vouched for by experts is solving previous year papers which can be found on the official websites. It will help you know what to focus on and how to excel. With digital resources at hand, students can also access IIT PAL videos which are tutorials prepared by IIT professors on topics from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Students can refer to these videos as well to understand a topic and clarify their doubts.

A crisis is a great opportunity to learn and develop new forms of learning. Online learning apps and platforms are available that provide a virtual classroom ambiance with complete notes, expert opinions, online classes, mock tests, etc for best student preparation. As the exams have been postponed, students have got more time to revise and clear the concepts. It has given them the opportunity to attempt more test series and work on their weak areas.
