SHSS introduced a new Post Graduate Programme (M. A.) in Development Studies in August, 2018. The two-year Master’s programme aims to create a pool of development practitioners and/or academics, who will be well equipped to participate in the process of sustainable development. The location of the Institute will also provide the programme with a unique opportunity to deal with development challenges in the Himalayan region, which has both local and global relevance. Another unique feature of the programme will be significant emphasis on field research and the orientation of problem solving to achieve development goals. In 2018, a batch of thirteen students joined the programme and the School is looking forward to the admission of the second batch in 2019.
IIT Mandi invites applications from interested candidates for admission to the two-year M.A. in Development Studies program starting from August 2019. Candidates may fill in the online application form at http://oas.iitmandi.ac.in/admission
Eligibility Criteria for Application:
i. Candidates with Bachelor Degree (e.g. B.A. /B.Sc. in Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Public Policy, Environmental Science or equivalent discipline; or B.Tech. /B.E. or equivalent)from a recognized University or Institute are encouraged to apply.
ii. Candidates should have at least 55% marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a scale 10)in their qualifying examination to apply foradmission to the program. Students belonging to reserved categories will geta relaxation as per institute rules.
iii. Applicants appearing/appeared in the final year of their qualifying exam with results awaited are also eligible to apply. However, their final selection will be contingent on production of final mark/grade sheet satisfying minimum marks.
Mode of Selection:
• Applications received will be subjected to shortlisting. The list of all shortlisted candidates will be notified on IIT Mandi website. No separate letter/email communication will be sent individually.
• Shortlisted candidates will appear for a written test, followed by an interview, to be held as per the schedule below.
• Starting date for filling online application: 14th June 2019
• Last date for submitting online application: 8th July 2019
• Announcement of shortlisted candidates for written exam: 12th July 2019
• Date of written test and interview: 25th and 26th July 2019

The course offers multi-disciplinary approach and foregrounds issues and challenges of development in Himalayan region.
A combination of rigorous and relevant courses with exposure to real-world development challenges.
Understanding the basic scientific and technological underpinning of some of the developmental challenges and their existing remedies.
A mandatory Field Study component to understand the laboratory of Development Studies. Participatory research through components of dissertation/guided internship.
Ability to communicate the results to a range of stakeholders: academia, professionals in policy making and implementation, local communities etc.
