Application Rating Score: AR= (A+B+C)
Normalised AR score of an applicant is equal to their AR score divided by average of the top 50 AR scores from the applicants’ pool, (the applicants’ pool in this case being defined as the group of candidates who appear for CAT-2017 and apply to IIMA.)
Shortlisting for Academic Writing Test (AWT) & Personal Interview (PI)
Shortlisting will be carried out in two stages.
Stage 1: (From the Applicants' pool: Selection of exceptional performers across different disciplines will be shortlisted for AWT & PI on the basis of their composite score ‘CS’ (see below) subject to their fulfilling certain criteria. From each of the academic categories (AC) for which the total number of applicants to IIMA who appear for CAT-2017 from SC/ST/NC-OBC/PWD categories is at least 100, the top 5% in the respective AC limited to the respective categories (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PWD) among the applicants to IIMA who appear for CAT-2017, henceforth referred to as ACRC groups, (subject to upper limits on the numbers per ACRC group as specified in the table below) will be shortlisted for AWT & PI on the basis of the composite score ‘CS’ (see below) subject to their fulfilling criteria C1-C3.
CS (Composite Score) = 0.3 (Normalised AR score) + 0.7 (Normalised overall score in CAT-2017)
The upper limits (UL) on the number of candidates to be shortlisted per ACRC
Category | Upper Limit (UL) Per ACRC |
---|---|
General | 100 |
NC-OBC-cum-transgender | 57 |
SC | 32 |
ST | 16 |
PWD |
Criteria C1-C3:
C1. PVRC, PDILR, PQA and PT must be greater than or equal to the minimum cut-offs as specified.
C2. P ≥ Minimum cut-offs (specific to the category and the stream as shown in the table below ), where P is the average of the percentages of marks scored in 10th and 12th std. examinations.
Minimum cut-off for P across different disciplines and different categories
Stream in 12th std. | General Category | NC-OBC cum transgender Category | SC Category |
---|---|---|---|
Science | 80 | 75 | 70 |
Commerce | 77 | 72 | 67 |
Arts & Humanities | 75 | 70 | 64 |
C3. (Percentage of marks in the bachelor’s examination) ≥ Minimum cut-off percentage, to be set at the 80th percentile of the percentage of marks of the respective ACRC group of the applicants’ pool, (the applicants’ pool in this case being defined as the group of candidates who appear for CAT-2017 apply to IIM Ahmedabad and belong to the respective ACRC.)
Any AC, for which the total number of applicants to IIMA who appear for CAT-2017
from SC/ST/NCOBC/PWD categories is less than 100, will not be subdivided into ACRCs as above. For such an AC, the top 100 or the top 5% in the respective AC among all the applicants to IIMA who appear for CAT-2017, whichever is less, will be shortlisted for AWT & PI on the basis of the composite score 'CS' subject to their fulfilling criteria C4-C6.
Criteria C4-C6:
C4. PT ≥ 80, PQA ≥ 70, PDILR ≥ 70 and PVRC ≥ 70.
C5. P ≥ 80 (Science), 77 (Commerce), 75 (Arts/Humanities), where P is the average of the percentages of marks scored in the 10th and 12th std. examinations.
C6. (Percentage of marks in the bachelor’s examination) ≥ Minimum cut-off percentage, to be set at the 80th percentile of the percentage of marks of the respective AC group of the applicants' pool, (the applicants’ pool in this case being defined as the group of candidates who appear for CAT-2017, apply to IIM Ahmedabad and belong to the respective AC.)
Stage 2: After removing the candidates selected in Stage 1 from each category (General, NC-OBC, SC, ST and PWD) the additional number of candidates to be shortlisted for AWT & PI will be selected on the basis of the composite score ‘CS’ (see above) subject to their fulfilling criteria C1-C2.
Final Selection
Selection at this stage will strictly be based on the ranks of the candidates computed separately for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PWD) on the basis of their ‘Final Composite Scores’ (FCS).
FCS = 0.50 (Normalised PI Score) + 0.10 (Normalised AWT Score) + 0.40 (CS).
The normalised PI and AWT scores of a candidate are their scores in the respective field divided by the average of the top 1% scores in the same field respectively.

Changes when compared to last year's admission criteria
IIM Bangalore adopts a two-phase selection process. The first phase process is applied to all eligible candidates who appear for CAT 2017 to determine those qualifying candidates who will be called for personal interview (PI).
The first shortlist of candidates is based on candidates securing minimum section-wise and aggregate percentile scores in the CAT. The percentile cut-off scores used for CAT 2016 ( last year ) are shown below
Category | VA/RC | DI/LR | QA | Overall |
---|---|---|---|---|
General | 85 | 80 | 80 | 90 |
NC-OBC | 75 | 70 | 70 | 80 |
SC | 70 | 65 | 65 | 75 |
ST | 60 | 60 | 60 | 75 |
DA | 60 | 60 | 60 | 75 |
The minimum overall percentile and the sectional percentiles requirements have not been disclosed for CAT 17
Once the first shortlist is generated, the weighted total of the six components namely (a) work experience or professional course, (b) CAT, (c) 10th board, (d) 12th board, (e) bachelors, (f) gender diversity is used to prepare a pre-PI rank list for calling candidates for the PI.
The candidates percentage scores in the 10th and 12th board exams are initially adjusted by dividing each such score by the 90th percentile score obtained in that board. Graduation scores are adjusted within their respective categories. This givesthe adjusted score for the bachelor’s degree for all candidates in the first shortlist.
The candidates with Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretary certifications are eligible for weight under professional course.
The score / weight for work experience is calculated as:
Pre PIscore forWork Experience = 8x/36 if 0 < x < 36; = 8 if x >= 36
Where x is the months of work experience up to July 2017. This implies that the score will peak at 36 months work experience and will remain at that level for candidates with work experience exceeding 36 months.
For all candidates in the first shortlist, the maximum of the work experience score and the professional course score is considered for selection under a common parameter of work experience
Criteria used for shortlisting candidates for WAT/PI round
Parameter | Weightage |
---|---|
CAT | 40 |
10th score | 20 |
12th score | 10 |
Graduation score | 20 |
Work Experience | 8 |
Gender Diversity | 2 |
Total | 100 |
Note-
The top 10 candidates in each of the following : total score in CAT, adjusted Bachelors’ score (commerce, arts, and science disciplines), and Professional (CA / ICWA / CS), from the first shortlist automatically qualify for PI. These candidates are given a chance to appear for PI due to their exceptional performance in these categories. However, at the end of Phase 2, all such candidates must merit selection at an identical level of composite aggregate score like any other candidate.
Final Selection Criteria
Parameter | Weightage |
---|---|
CAT | 25 |
10th score | 10 |
12th score | 5 |
Graduation score | 10 |
Work Experience | 10 |
WAT | 10 |
PI | 30 |
Total | 100 |
During the PI process, the candidates selected will have to write a short note (one page) on a topic provided by IIMB. The time provided for writing the note will typically be about 30 minutes. During the interview, the panel will evaluate each candidate's performance on academic background, quality of work experience and other personal traits. The written note will be evaluated separately. Scores of both, written note and interview, in combination with pre-PI selection parameters will be used cumulatively in the second and final phase of selection.
The quality of work experience score will be evaluated on a 5 point scale (0.25 - 0.5 – 1 - 1.5 - 2) by each member of the panel during the interviews. The average quality of work experience score will be multiplied by the pre-PI work experience score and accordingly the work / professional experience component score (maximum score 8) used in Phase 1 will be revised in Phase 2 (maximum score 10).
Note - The maximum of the work experience score and the professional course score is considered for selection under a common weight of 10 for work experience or professional course – since both provide professional work experience relevant to a management programme.

One point to be noted here is that IIM Kozhikode has given 75 marks out of 100 marks to CAT performance of a candidate, while only 25 marks are assigned to the other parameters. This goes on to show that performing well in CAT 2017 would go a long way in securing a WATGD/PI call from this premier B-school.
The following are the weightages that would be considered during the final selection of candidates
Component | Maximum Weight |
---|---|
Personal Interview | 45.00% |
CAT | 35.00% |
GD/WAT | 15.00% |
Work Experience Quality | 5.00% |
To conclude, one important observation about this year's selection process is that the total weightage for parameters which are controllable (CAT, WAT and PI) in the final selection stage has been kept at a whopping 95%. This ensures that the applicants, who do not have a good academic profile or work experience can still aspire to join IIM Kozhikode by preparing well for CAT 2017, WAT and PI rounds.
Compared to last year, the following is the major change in their admission criteria
Admission Process:
The admission process for the PGP program comprises two phases
Phase 1 – Shortlisting for GD & PI
For consideration in this shortlist, following are the minimum requirements
Category | Xth % | XIIth % | Grad % | VA/RC %ile | LR/DI %ile | QA %ile |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
DA | 50 | 50 | 45 | 50 | 50 | 50 |
ST | 50 | 50 | 45 | 50 | 50 | 50 |
SC | 55 | 55 | 50 | 60 | 60 | 60 |
Others | 80 | 80 | 65 | 70 | 70 | 70 |
The candidates obtained from the above filtering are then classified into 7 academic categories. The applicants are segregated based on their academic category (AC 1 to AC 7) and reservation category.
Applicants of each academic category will be shortlisted proportional to their representation in the overall number of applicants. For instance, if 70% of the overall applicants belong to AC-4, then 70% of the shortlisted candidates would be belonging to that category.
Within each academic category, the percentage of calls given to the candidates of each reservation category is listed below:
The required number of candidates from each academic category and reservation category will be called for the GD and PI round based on their CAT Score.
Phase 2 – Merit Listing for Admission Offer
Scores of GD and PI of each shortlisted candidate will be clubbed together. These values are then normalized. These normalized scores will account for 70% and normalized CAT scores will account for the remaining 30% of the final score that will be used for final selection of candidates.
Final Merit Score = 20% (Normalized GD score ) + 50% ( Normalized PI Score) + 30% (Normalized overall CAT score)
Candidates will need to ensure that they meet the minimum cutoff performance in the GD & PI round in order to land a final admission. The cutoff in terms of a percentage of minimum performance in GD & PI to the maximum possible score in the round is different across reservation categories. Following is the corresponding table -
Category | Cutoff as Minimum Percentage of Performance out of Maximum Possible Combined Performance in PI |
---|---|
DA | 20 |
ST | 20 |
SC | 20 |
Others | 30 |
Changes when compared to last year
Admission Process:
The admission process for the PGP program comprises of following stages.
During the first stage, initially a pool of candidates who satisfy the following minimum CAT 2016 percentiles are considered.
Category of Candidate | Sectional Percentile | Overall Percentile |
---|---|---|
General | 80 | 90 |
OBC (NC) | 72 | 81 |
SC | 60 | 75 |
ST | 50 | 65 |
DAP | 55 | 70 |
Among the pool of candidates who meet the above mentioned percentiles, a list of candidates would be called for attending Written ability test (WAT) and Personal Interview depending on their performance in CAT.
One point to be noted here is that for shortlisting candidates for WAT/PI rounds IIM Trichy is considering only the CAT performance of a candidate. This goes on to show that performing well in CAT 2016 would go a long way in securing a WATGD//PI call from this premier B-school.
The following are the weightages that would be considered during the final selection of candidates
Component | Maximum Weight |
---|---|
CAT | 50% |
Personal Interview | 15% |
WAT | 15% |
Work Experience | 5% |
Graduation marks | 10% |
Masters Degree or professional course (CA/ICWA/CS) | 2% |
Gender Diversity | 3% |
To conclude, one important observation about this year's selection process is that the total weightage for parameters which are controllable (CAT,WAT and PI) in the final selection stage has been kept at a whopping 80%. This ensures that the applicants, who do not have a good academic profile or work experience can still aspire to join IIM Trichy by preparing well for CAT 2016, WAT and PI rounds.
Note- The Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test would be conducted at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. The exact date for PI & WAT will be communicated to the short¬listed candidates by IIM Rohtak which is co-ordinating for 2017-19 batch on behalf of IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodhgaya & IIM Sambalpur (also referred to as “9 IIMs”).
In cases where candidates have been shortlisted by the 9 IIMs as well as older IIMs, IIM Rohtak would obtain the PI & WAT scores of such candidates directly from the older IIMs. Such candidates will be informed in advance by IIM Rohtak, and they need not appear for the common PI & WAT of the “9 IIMs.”
DAP | 50 | 65 |
Among the pool of candidates who meet the above mentioned percentiles, a list of candidates would be called for attending Written ability test (WAT) and Personal Interview depending on their performance in CAT.
One point to be noted here is that for shortlisting candidates for WAT/PI rounds IIM Ranchi is considering only the CAT performance of a candidate. This goes on to show that performing well in CAT 2016 would go a long way in securing a WAT/PI call from this premier B-school.
The following are the weightages that would be considered during the final selection of candidates
Component | Maximum Weight |
---|---|
CAT Score | 30% |
Personal Interview | 30% |

HSC | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
GRADUATION | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
To conclude, one important observation about this year's selection process is that the total weightage for parameters which are controllable (CAT, WAT and PI) in the final selection stage has been kept at 70%. This ensures that the applicants, who do not have a good academic profile or work experience can still aspire to join IIM Ranchi by preparing well for CAT 2016, WAT and PI rounds.
Changes when compared to last year
The minimum CAT sectional percentile requirement has been reduced for differently abled (DA) candidate from 55 percentile to 50 percentile.

Candidates with Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretary certifications are eligible for weight under professional course. No other professional course is eligible for weight under professional course.
The score/weight for work experience is calculated as: Score for Work Experience = 10x/36 (if 0 < x < 36) = 10 (if x >= 36)
Where x is the months of work experience , as captured in CAT application form (and substantiated in the application to IIMV). This implies that the score will peak at 36 months work experience and will remain at that level for candidates with work experience exceeding 36 months.

The IIMs follow a 2 stage selection process – the written exam (CAT) and the GWPI (Group discussion / Written ability test / Personal Interview). At most of the IIMs a shortlist of candidates is prepared after the first stage taking into account the performance in the written exam, academic background, work experience etc.
Shortlisted applicants are required to appear for the second stage of the admission process wherein they would go through a personal interview, written ability test and/or a group discussion. Most IIMs have now shifted to Written Ability Test (WAT) from Group Discussion (GD) as a part of the selection process. The final list of selected candidates is prepared taking into account your performance in the written exam, the GWPI process, academic background, work experience etc.
Weightage - Various Components of Selection Process
The weightage of various components in the selection process varies across institutes and varies from year-to-year for most institutes. In general, we can say that most of the premier B-schools give high weightage to performance in CAT/GD/WAT/PI rounds and relatively lesser weightage to other factors like academic profile, work ex etc.
At this stage, many students are given to understand that getting a call from an IIM is extremely difficult and converting a call even more so. Through this section we will try to dispel a few myths surrounding the selection process of the IIMs. In the process, we will also share the details of shortlisting at various stages.
Some students have the misconception that even if they do exceptionally well in CAT, they may not get an IIM call as the IIMs give a lot of importance to academic background, work experience, extra-curricular activities etc. Lets take a look at the weightage to CAT in the preparation of Interview shortlist as followed by various IIMs.
Weight of CAT Score | List of IIMs |
---|---|
100.00% | 9 ( IIM Shillong, Ranchi, Raipur,Udaipur,Kashipur,Trichy, Bodhgaya, Sambalpur, Amritsar ) |
60 to 80% | 3 (IIM Ahmedabad, Lucknow,Kozhikode ) |
50 to 59% | 2 ( IIM Calcutta, Rohtak ) |
20 to 40% | 3 (IIM Bangalore, Indore, Vizag ) |
As you will observe from the above table,12 out of 17 IIMs award at least 60% weightage to your CAT score in the preparation of their shortlists.
Note - IIM Sirmaur,Nagpur and Jammu did not conduct GD/WAT/PI rounds, hence they are not being mentioned here.
Minimum CAT percentiles for getting a call:
It is true that to get a call from IIM A or C a general category student would need a very high percentile in the entrance test (CAT). IIM B and I lay a lot of emphasis on academic background for shortlisting.
The following table shows the CAT 2016 percentile cutoffs for securing a call from IIM Rohtak

The naysayers opine that if you are not a 90% throughout your academic career and do not have a minimum work experience of 3 years, you do not stand a chance to get any of the IIMs. This is absolutely false.Let us look at the weightage to academic background and work experience in the preparation of final shortlists.
Weightage | No. of IIMs |
---|---|
Less than 10% | 6 (IIM Calcutta, Lucknow,Kozhikode, Shillong, Kashipur, Amritsar ) |
11% to 20% | 6 (IIM Ahmedabad,Indore, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur ) |
21% to 30% | 3 ( IIM Raipur, Bodhgaya,Sambalpur ) |
More than 30% | 5 (IIM B, Sirmaur, Vizag,Nagpur, Jammu ) |
Note - IIM Sambalpur and Nagpur have not yet disclosed their selection policy for CAT 2016.
As can be seen, only 6 of the 18 IIMs give more than 20% weightange to these two parameters combined. For all other IIMs, these are far lesser important than they are made out to be.
As they say, there are things outside our control and there is no use worrying about them. And, there are things we can control and lets make the most of them. If we assume that Academic background, gender and work experience are not really within our control as far as writing CAT is concerned, and only our performance in CAT and the WAT/GD/PI process are what we can control ( lets call them 'controllables'), the distribution of these Controllables in the final selection stands as follows:
Weightage | No. of IIMs |
---|---|
100.00% | IIM Shillong |
80-99% | 8 ( IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta,Lucknow, Indore,Kozhikode, Trichy, Amritsar,Kashipur) |
70-79% | 5 ( Ranchi, Rohtak, Udaipur, Bodhgaya, Sambalpur ) |
50-69% | 6 ( IIM Bangalore, Raipur, Sirmaur,Vizag, Jammu, Nagpur ) |
Note - IIM Sambalpur and Nagpur have not yet disclosed their selection policy for CAT 2016.
What is amply clear from the above is that with a good performance in CAT and the GWPI process, we still have a good chance of getting into one of the IIMs not withstanding the academic/work ex background. Also, there are many non-IIM B-schools like MDI, FMS, XLRI, IIFT, NMIMS which give substantial weightage to the entrance process and still fetch us excellent salaries. So, before you say you can't, say I'll try and then give it your best!
Note - These are just the minimum percentiles required ( as per CAT 2016 ) to be considered for shortlisting and does not ensure an interview call from IIMs. The actual cutoffs are usually much higher.

GWPI stands for, as you know, Group Discussion, Written Ability Test (WAT), and PersonalInterview. It earlier used to be called GDPI. However, of late, with the IIMs clearly moving towards WAT as against GD, GWPI is the preferred terminology. Some B-schools call Written Ability Test as essay-writing also.
GWPI is the second stage of the B-school selection process. The number of students who get a call for the GWPI stage (get shortlisted) depends on the number of seats that an Institute has and the call:seat ratio. Call:Seat ratio is the ratio of the number of students called for the GWPI process to the number of seats available. This ratio could range from a minimum of 2.5:1 for the top-most B-schools to anything for the lower ranked B-schools. In general, most of the B-schools in the top-15 range would have a ratio in the range 10:1 to 15:1. What this means for a candidate is that getting a shortlist from the thousands of candidates applying to a B-school is only half the task well done. The other half would be to do well in the GWPI process and get a final seat in the preferred B - School.
So what is that India's top B-Schools look for in aspirants? Well, to begin with, they look for individuals with aptitude to learn, have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, are gifted with clear and rational thinking, have the capacity to put in long hours, and possess an ability to understand and articulate with clarity. As identifying, gathering, and sorting material of relevance is a difficult and time consuming job, we will do all this for you through the GWPI Briefcase. In GWPI Briefcase, you will find the following features:
Also, the other regular features of the GWPI Briefcase like Articles from MBA Education & Careers, Important Issues in a Nutshell, and GWPI Experiences of Students (of previous years) will be added after the CAT results are announced.
We are sure the GWPI Briefcase will help you immensely in your effort to make it to the b-school of your choice.
Management entrance exams test a student's aptitude and proficiency in the test areas like Verbal Ability, Quantitative Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation, Data Sufficiency, Reasoning, General Awareness etc. However, the number of questions, sections, the duration of the exam, the number of questions from each area and the level of toughness of the paper varies from exam to exam. The questions given in management entrance tests are all objective type multiple choice questions.
VERBAL ABILITY (VA)
Verbal Ability is an area that is present in almost all the management tests. Questions in this area cover Vocabulary (Synonyms, Antonyms, etc), Grammar (Sentence Correction), Language Usage (Fill in the Blanks), Verbal Reasoning (Analogies, etc.). In some tests, there is a separate section for Verbal Ability whereas in some other tests, there is one section which includes both Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension.
READING COMPREHENSION (RC)
In Reading Comprehension, students have to read passage(s) and answer questions that follow the passages. This area tests the ability of the student to quickly grasp what is being said in the passage before answering the questions. The length of each passage and the number of questions that follow a passage vary from exam to exam. In some tests, Reading Comprehension appears as a separate section whereas in some other exams, there could be one section which includes Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability.
QUANTITATIVE ABILITY (QA)
While the term Quantitative Ability is a very broad one covering any question that deals with figures and numbers, in the context of management entrance exams, most people use the terms Quantitative Ability or Quantitative Aptitude to refer to questions in Mathematics. This is an area that is present in almost every management entrance test. Students are tested on questions that are mostly of X Standard level - mainly in the areas of Arithmetic, Plane Geometry, Mensuration and Algebra. Sometimes, questions are also asked from Trigonometry, Co-ordinate Geometry, Permutation & Combination, and Probability.
DATA INTERPRETATION (DI)
Data Interpretation is an area where students are presented with data in the form of tables, pie charts, bar graphs, Venn diagrams, geometrical diagrams, etc. Questions are given based on the data. Students are required to study the data presented and answer the questions based on the data. Data Interpretation is a "quantitative" area.
In most exams, there may not be a separate section for Data Interpretation but it is given as a part of another section - normally along with questions on Mathematics.
DATA SUFFICIENCY (DS)
Data Sufficiency is another "quantitative" area that appears in some management entrance exams. Data Sufficiency is not a separate section in most exams but only a part of another section (along with Quant/DI generally). As the name indicates, the questions in Data Sufficiency give some data following a question and the student is expected to comment on the sufficiency of the data to answer the question.
LOGICAL REASONING (LR)A variety of names like Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Logical Ability, Reasoning, Mental Ability are used to refer to questions based on reasoning. The questions on Logic in entrance exams normally do not require a formal exposure to Logic. These are based on day-to-day, commonsense reasoning.
GENERAL AWARENESS (GA)
Some management entrance exams like IIFT, SNAP, etc have General Awareness as a part of the paper. In this area, questions are asked on current issues, past issues, economic, and business related issues. Some exams have questions related to specific fields like foreign trade related questions in IIFT. It is to be noted that CAT has not been giving any questions in this area.
