The school education department has decided to allow physical sessions for the class 5 to 8 from January 27 with permission from chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Meanwhile the Mumbai civic body has decided to keep schools shut until further notice.

Varsha Gaikwad, minister for school education told the media that the local authority should take the responsibility of the safety measures on the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic. About other measures the minister said, “Though the state will issue separate standard operating procedure (SOP) soon about how to go ahead with the reopening of schools in the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Many cities in the state are still reporting new cases of Covid-19 positive. Gaikwad added, “It will be necessary to have parent consent for students to attend the school physically. Apart from other measures, RT-PCR test for teachers will also be required for safety,” said the minister.

On the other hand, the BMC has yet not allowed for reopening for schools in the city even for classes IX to XII. In a circular issued on Friday evening, the BMC education department said that schools in the city will remain shut until further notice. However, based on a previous notification the civic body will allow schools to host board exams and pre-boards if mandatory by the education bodies.
