JEE Main Session 1 2023 : Day 1 exam analysis

The JEE (Main) 2023 Paper-I for those aspiring for B.E. / B. Tech was held on 24th January 2023.

The reporting time for students was 1:30 pm however the exam started sharp at 3:00 pm. There were a total of 90 questions and the total marks of JEE Main Paper-1 were 300. 5 out of 10 questions were to be attempted from the Numerical Based section in each subject. Questions covered almost all chapters of Class XI & XII CBSE Board.

Students were not allowed to carry anything inside the examination hall except a transparent ballpoint Pen, Admit Card & Aadhar Card. All guidelines as released by NTA earlier were followed for the safety of the exam takers.

The paper had three parts & each part had two sections:

Part-I- Physics had a total of 30 questions – Sec-I had 20 Multiple choice questions with Single correct answers & Sec-II had 10 Numerical based questions out of which only 5 had to be attempted. The marking scheme for multiple choice questions was +4 for a correct response, -1 for an incorrect response, and 0 if not attempted. The marking scheme for numerical-based questions was +4 for a correct response, -1 for an incorrect response and 0 in all other cases. The total marks for this section were 100.

Part II- Chemistry had a total of 30 questions – Sec-I had 20 Multiple choice questions with Single correct answers & Sec-II had 10 Numerical based questions out of which only 5 had to be attempted. The level of difficulty as per feedback from students on 24th January 2023 (Afternoon Session).

Mathematics – Moderate. Weightage was given to chapters of Algebra- like Permutation & Combination, Progression & Series, Statistics, Complex Numbers, Binomial, Matrices, Determinants, Vectors & 3D Geometry. In Co-ordinate Geometry questions asked from Straight Lines & Circles. In Calculus -Differential Equations, Definite Integral & Functions. Few Numerical Based questions required lengthy calculations. This section was also tricky as per students.

Physics – Easy level. Questions were asked from almost all chapters with few good questions from Work, Power & Energy, Wave Optics, Electrostatics, EM Waves, Modern Physics, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Magnetism, Kinematics, Heat & Thermodynamics. Numerical-based questions were easy. It was a balanced section.

Chemistry – Easy to Moderate level. Inorganic Chemistry was given less weightage as compared to Organic & Physical Chemistry. In Physical Chemistry, questions were asked about Chemical Kinetics, Ionic Equilibrium, and atomic Structure. Organic Chemistry had questions from Amines, Aldehyde & Ketones, and General Organic Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry was tricky but from NCERT. Overall, this section was Easy to Moderate.

In terms of order of Difficulty – Mathematics was Moderate, Chemistry was Easy to Moderate, and physics was reported Easy among the three subjects. Overall, this paper was of Moderate level as per students.
