Up until a while ago, Biology and Engineering were considered mutually exclusive branches of knowledge and practice. This misconception has been shattered by strides in both life sciences and engineering over the last two decades. A career in biomedical engineering may be right for you if you wish to combine your passion for engineering with the ability to create life-saving medical devices.
About the course
Bioengineering applies engineering principles of design and analysis to biological systems and biomedical technologies. Courses offered under the titles of ‘Biotechnology’ or ‘Biomedical Engineering’ form a subset of ‘Bioengineering’. Students in this field are trained in the fundamentals of both Biology and Engineering, including elements of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics, Cell and Molecular Biology, and more. This breadth allows students to specialise in their areas of interest. In Bioengineering academics, these specialised areas are called ‘concentrations’, which include following segments of Bioengineering: 1. Bioprocess Engineering
2. Bioinformatics
3. Biomedical Instrumentation
4. Biomechanics
5. Genetic Engineering
Future prospects
Future prospects of Bioengineering and Bioprocess Engineering are concerned with using enzymes and microorganisms to manufacture drug molecules, proteins, nutrients and fuels at an industrial scale. Soon, by programming DNA and directing cellular machinery, we can obtain products that were unimaginable a decade ago.
Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to understand and ef-
fectively use biological and biomedical data. One of its applications can be seen in agriculture where bioinformatics helps insect resistance and improvement of nutritional quality. Biomedical Instrumentation consists of machines, software, or other related articles designed for safe and effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases for humans. With sensor-enhanced smartphones that can measure heart rate and oxygen saturation, and the widespread availability of fitness apps, bioinstrumentation has become ingrained in many people's daily lives.
Biomechanics is the study of the structure, function and motion of the mechanical aspects of biological systems using mechanics. Biomechanics is widely used to design orthopaedic implants for human joints, dental parts, external fixations and other medical purposes. In the world of sports, biomechanics has been applied greatly because of its ability to analyse sports movements to decrease the athlete’s risk of certain injuries and improve their overall performance. Genetic Engineering, sometimes called genetic modification, is a set of technologies aimed at altering the DNA in an organism’s genome to alter its characteristics benefitting humanity. Genetic enginee- ring has been applied in fields such as medicine, industrial biotechnology and agriculture.
Changing course dimensions
Bioengineering is a fast-growing, multidisciplinary area that includes medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, nanotechnology, and computer science. Bioengineers are at the vanguard of scientific advancement, developing cutting-edge medical equipment, vaccines, disease management products, robotics, and algorithms that benefit the masses. In manufacturing, new generation drugs and fuels are increasingly manufactured using bio-catalytic routes. In medicine, nanotechnology driven drug delivery methods, tissue-engineered organs, artificial limbs and implants, and robot-assisted surgeries have revolutionised diagnostics and treatment methods. Thus, new and challenging careers, founded on both biology and engineering together have emerged.
Bioengineers are also increasingly employed in sustainability research to manufacturing recyclable materials and biofuels.
