The Government of West Bengal has selected Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur as the Mentor Institute for IIIT, Kalyani. This Institute is country's second oldest institution for engineering education and has a long and chequered history. It was formerly an institution under the State Government of West Bengal and known as Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur.

Indian Institute of Information Technology, Kalyani (IIIT Kalyani) is one of the 20 Indian Institutes of Information Technology located at Kalyani, West Bengal. The classes started from first week of July 2014, from the temporary campus located at the campus of JIS College of Engineering.[1] On 19 August 2014, official inauguration of the institute was done by the former mentor director Prof. Ajoy Kumar Ray, the director of IIEST Shibpur. Admission to IIIT Kalyani.[2] is done on the basis of the marks obtained in the JEE Main.
