Career Choices after Picking the PCB Stream

PUBLISH DATE 27th December 2017

Post 10th standard, all of us arrive at a crossroad, where we need to choose a stream that will determine our profession and eventually, the rest of our lives. While many of us choose Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (PCM), there are many who choose Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) and pursue a profession in the medical field. But unlike engineering, the medical field offers several options to students. Choosing the right course after 12th is extremely important because a well-thought-out decision can lead to a rewarding career or may become a basis for the post graduation course. It is difficult to pick one because there are so many good options, which have a good scope but we do not know which is appropriate for us.

In this article, we’ve listed the different possible career options if you have opted for PCB. To begin with, here is an exhaustive list of all the options available to you:

  1. MBBS – Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
  2. BHMS – Bachelor of Homeopathy Medicine and Surgery
  3. BAMS – Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
  4. BUMS – Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery
  5. BDS – Bachelor of Dental Surgery
  6. B Sc AH (Animal Husbandry)  Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences
  7. B Sc – Bachelor of Science
  8. B Sc Microbiology – Bachelor of Science in Microbiology
  9. B Sc Biotechnology – Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology
  10. B Sc Bio Chemistry – Bachelor of Science in Bio Chemistry

  26. B Sc Botany
  27. B Sc Zoology
  28. B Sc Anthropology
  29. B Sc Home Science

Subjects such as physics, chemistry and biology (PCB) are required for students aspiring to take up careers in medicine or dental studies, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology, agricultural and dairy science. Options are also available in the paramedical and allied fields such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology, Speech Therapy, Medical Lab Technology, Optometry, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacy etc. Those interested in Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science can take up a career as a veterinary doctor. For that, they have to appear for the entrance examination conducted by Veterinary Council of India for getting admission to first year Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.

Those with +2 science Bio-maths can take up either an engineering or a medical career. Admission to these professional courses is through entrance examinations. If not interested in engineering and medical field, 10+2 science students can go for B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science) program of their choice, which can be followed by Master’s degree (M.Sc.), Ph.D and M.Phil. Teaching is another option.

Let’s look at the most popular career choices of students who’ve opted for PCB:

Medicine

The most common career choice for students opting for PCB stream is to become a doctor. The first requirement is to clear NEET and/or the state medical entrance exams and secure a seat in a medical college. The undergraduate programs – MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) and BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) are of 5 years. Upon completion, the student can opt for postgraduate studies for specialization. Read our articlePursuing Medicine: Career and Lifestyle to get the real picture.

Dentistry

Dentistry is a branch of medicine that specifically deals with the oral cavity. The first requirement is to clear NEET and/or the state medical entrance exams and secure a seat in a medical college.
