Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance examination conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is constituted by two different examinations - JEE Main and the JEE Advanced. The exams are of the objective pattern. JEE Advanced is regarded internationally as one of the most challenging undergraduate admission tests.

In 2012, the government-run Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that earlier conducted the AIEEE, announced the JEE that replaced the AIEEE and IIT-JEE. The JEE-Main, which replaces AIEEE, is for admission to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and some other colleges designated as "centrally funded technical institutes" (CFTIs) The JEE-Advanced, which replaces IIT-JEE, is for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the students selected in JEE Mains are eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced. About 2,24,000 Top students will be selected from 2018.

There are some institutes like the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, and the Indian Institute of Science which use the score obtained in JEE Advanced as the basis for admission. These are not participating institutes of central IIT JEE Advanced counseling of which all IITs are members. Any student who takes admission to IITs cannot appear for the JEE-Advanced exam in the next year, but the same is not the case with IISc, IISER, RGIPT and other institutes as these institutes only use JEE Advanced score for admission.

In September 2013, the IIT Council approved the decision of the Joint Admission Board to continue with the two-phase JEE pattern ("Main" followed by "Advanced") for IITs in 2014. Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducted the joint admission process for a total of 23 IITs, ISM, 32 NITs, 18 IIITs and 19 other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs).

As per the reports from Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of Government of India, the government is considering to conduct only one common engineering entrance test based on the lines of NEET for all engineering colleges, including private institutions, across India.

About JoSAA

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2017 has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate the joint seat allocation for admissions to 97 institutes for the academic year 2017-18. This includes 23 IITs,  31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 20 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Admission to all the academic programs offered by these Institutes will be made through a single platform.

All the candidates
who appeared for JEE (Main) 2017 / JEE (Advanced) 2017 should take note of the following important points:

Registration:

All candidates who have appeared in JEE (Main) 2017 are eligible to register for seat allocation in NIT+ system (except IITs).

All candidates who have declared qualified in JEE (Adv) 2017 are eligible to register for seat allocation in all participating Institutes.

Filling-in of choices: Candidates may fill-in their choices of Institutes and branches in decreasing order of their preference. Candidates are strongly urged to fill-in as many choices as possible.

Locking of choices: Candidates MUST “lock” their choices. For candidates who do NOT lock their choices, their last saved choices will be locked automatically when the time-window for filling-in of choices closes.

Number of rounds of seat allocation: JoSAA will conduct seven rounds that is 1st through 7th rounds of seat allocation for academic programs offered by Institutes under JoSAA 2017.

Seat acceptance: Candidates allotted a seat must pay the seat acceptance fee (through e-Challan/SBI NetBanking) and get the documents verified at any reporting center (josaa.nic.in) for provisional seat acceptance .

Participation in subsequent rounds: A candidate is required to fill option for ‘freeze’, ‘slide’ or ‘float’ the choice of academic program.

Dual Reporting: If in a subsequent round, a candidate’s allotment from NIT+ system changes to an IIT, the candidate MUST report ONCE AGAIN at an IIT reporting centre, similarly if a candidate’s allotment from IIT changes to an NIT+ system, the candidate MUST report ONCE AGAIN at any NIT+ reporting centre, failure to do so will result in forfeiture of seats allocated in both NIT+ system and IIT.

Withdraw option: A candidate, who has already accepted a seat, can withdraw the seat by reporting at a reporting center up to sixth round of seat allocation.

Important:

Registration – Candidates who do NOT register within the specified time window WILL NOT be able to seek admission for this academic year

Filling-in of choices – Candidates who do NOT fill-in choices within the specified time window WILL NOT be able to seek admission for this academic year

Dual Reporting: Two times reporting required in case of seat allotment changes from NIT+s system to IITs and vice versa.

No modification of locked choices – once locked, choices CANNOT be modified.

CSAB is the central seat allocation board (earlier central counselling board), and it responsible for the allocation of engineering and architecture seats of NITs, IIITs, and other Government Funded Institutes (GFTIs).

They will be conducting admissions into NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through different channels. CSAB 2018 special round for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs will be held for those candidates who were not allotted in JoSAA counselling but have valid JEE Main scores. The registration for this channel will commence tentatively from the fourth week of July 2018.

Candidates belonging to Northeastern states and Union Territories will be able to apply for admission through CSAB NUET 2018. The application form will be available tentatively in the first week of July 2018. Allotment of seats will be done according to the candidates’ merit and preference of seats. Similarly, CSAB UT and SFTI will be conducted for Union Territories candidates and Self Financing Technical Institutes (SFTI) accordingly. Around 19 institutes are currently participating in CSAB 2018. Candidates who have not qualified JEE Main examination will not be allowed to participate in CSAB 2018.
