The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) board has announced to conduct the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) for engineering before the Class 12th board examinations.
Initially scheduled to be held on April 19 next year, the WBJEE 2020 examination has now been preponed by 10 weeks. As per the revised schedule, the WBJEE 2020 exam will be held on February 2, 2020.
"The board had decided to hold the entrance test on the first Sunday of February every year. The proposal had been forwarded to state education minister Partha Chatterjee for approval," said WBJEE board chairman, Malayendu Saha.
Chatterjee had suggested the advancement of the entrance test at a stakeholders’ meeting on August 20 this year.
Traditionally, the WBJEE used to be held in April after the completion of Class-XII examinations of various boards.
The reason behind the change of date, the WBJEE board officials said, was to ensure enrolment of more students in engineering colleges across the state. This year, as many as 18,000 of the 32,000-odd seats have gone a-begging.
Though the vacancy in engineering courses is a nationwide trend owing to a dip in job opportunities, students from Bengal continue to migrate to engineering colleges in Karnataka, Pune, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Rajasthan. This, some believe, is primarily because admission tests to engineering colleges in these states are held before WBJEE.
An official of the higher education department said publication of JEE results on time would help the students who are interested in studying engineering. While there are proponents of the move, some people are concerned about the adverse impact on students who have less than a month to prepare for the Class-XII boards after appearing for WBJEE.
