TN may not be exempted from NEET

PUBLISH DATE 15th August 2017

Amid political assurances that the Centre will approve a year of exemption to Tamil Nadu from the National Eligibility-cumEntrance Test (NEET) for admission to undergraduate medical courses if the state brings an ordinance, experts say such an ordinance will be unconstitutional and will not stand the scrutiny of courts. “If the state decides to bring an ordinance, the court will most certainly strike it down,“ a senior official said.

Tamil Nadu netas have been raising concerns that rural students are at a disadvantage while seeking admission with the new examination system which replaced All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and all individual MBBS exams conducted by states or colleges for admission to UG medical courses in government as well as private medical colleges in India as they would find it difficult to compete with CBSE students.

However, the number of rural students seeking admission to medical courses are estimated at just 250-300 for the 10,000 medical seats in the state.
