Students’ creativity to be tested in first language paper

PUBLISH DATE 30th July 2018

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has decided to help students approach first language papers of Class 12, in a different way, encouraging imagination over rote learning. For this, the state board had made changes in the examination format introducing a worksheet instead of a traditional question paper.

“We have been trying to implement the worksheet format for the past three years in phases. Under this format, students will be solving the papers based on critical thinking, imagination and their creativity. So, instead of question papers students will be solving a worksheet which will push students to think, understand, imagine and answer, not merely mug up and write it all out.” said Shakuntala Kale, chairperson of the state board. In order to facilitate this in its entirety, the board has also introduced a special workshop to help students accommodate the pattern. While the curricula for Class 12 had been revised in the academic year 2013-14 and is being continued, the change in pattern in the exams is attempted to help students take the first language paper more seriously, encouraging gaining of knowledge and insight over information.

“As a subject, the first language, be it English, Marathi or Hindi is important as it shapes up the power of expression for the student. Each language has its rich literature which needs to be understood and internalised not memorised. So instead of basic questions and answers , more comprehensive evaluation of their understanding will be done, taking in more current references to see how they draw the parallels,” Kale added.

The change in the pattern is applicable in the written exams of 80 marks, and not on the oral test of 20 marks. From now on, this manner of evaluation has been implemented for Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Gujarati, Urdu, Kannada and Telugu.

Further, a special training for teachers has also been organised so that they can correctly guide the students to be creative and use their potential imagination.
