Scholarship scam: FIRs likely against 70 colleges

PUBLISH DATE 14th December 2017

After months of dilly-dallying, the Maharashtra government has finally agreed to lodge offences against 70 colleges that allegedly siphoned crores of scholarship money.

On August 25, TOI had reported how these colleges, named by the special investigation team (SIT), gobbled huge amounts through bogus students and fake documents, thus causing massive losses to the exchequer.

Social justice and special assistance minister Rajkumar Badole informed about the government’s decision in a reply to a starred question by MLAs Hasan Mushrif, Bacchu Kadu, Yashomati Thakur and others. These institutions were named by the SIT in its interim report.

TOI reported how the officials from the social justice and special assistance and tribal development departments were dilly-dallying over SIT’s recommendations over lodging of FIRs against them for recovery of the amount for over six months. Among erring colleges, most are from Solapur and Chandrapur, followed by Beed and Nandurbar.

SIT officials claimed that senior officials from the both departments formed a racket with the managements of colleges to siphon the amount. Badole informed that 68 colleges from the social justice and two from tribal development departments were named by the SIT for misappropriation of scholarship money of Rs28.3 crore. He informed that social welfare commissioner Milind Shambharkar was directed to instruct assistant commissioners in all districts to lodge FIRs against colleges coming under their respective jurisdictions.

Badole clarified that some institutes had moved court and obtained stays against lodging of offences.
