PMC new sports policy, 'Adoption of Sportsperson'

PUBLISH DATE 28th November 2018

With a revised Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) sports policy in the offing, young sportspersons in the city can now hope for better facilities and financial help.

The policy will introduce a scheme — ‘Adoption of Sportsperson’ — to mentor 50 promising sportspersons in the city.

“The civic body will shoulder the responsibility of these players. Their sporting activities and practice sessions will be funded by the PMC. The corporation will also take care of their training facilities and food requirements,” said a senior civic official.

The programme will cover 10 sporting disciplines and the eligibility age has been capped at 24 years. Sportspersons, who are ranked first, second or third at the state or national levels will be “adopted”. The PMC will sponsor the travel expenses of the players to participate in events outside the city as well.

The scheme also has a “punishment” clause. Anyone found fudging their performance report to get into the programme will be dismissed and slapped with a fine of Rs 1,000. Also, sportspersons participating only in invitational events will not be accepted into the programme.

The new sports policy aims to offer civic sporting facilities to the students of municipal schools free of cost. Apart from promoting sporting activities in the city, it has also promised to protect land marked for playgrounds. Creating awareness about sports among children is also the mandate of the policy.

The policy has guidelines for constructing of sports complexes and developing grounds. It has been drafted after consultations with sportsmen, coaches and sports organisations in the city. The development plan of PMC has reserved 70 hectares in various parts of the city where sporting facilities and playgrounds are to be built.

The policy has been tabled before the standing committee meeting. “The members of the committee want to study it further. The final call will be taken in the next meeting,” said Yogesh Mulik, the chairman of the committee.
