Of 705 colleges under Pune varsity, only 224 have NAAC accreditation

PUBLISH DATE 26th October 2017

Only 224 out of 705 colleges affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University have got a valid National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation.

A high-ranking official from the varsity shared this information with TOI on Wednesday . He said, “Only 224 colleges affiliated to the varsity have NAAC approval. The colleges are given five years after their inception to get permanent affiliation to the university , following which they need to apply for NAAC accreditation. The reaccreditation process is done every seventh year thereafter.“

When contacted, vice-chancellor of the university N R Karmalkar said the numbers will improve soon. “ A lot of colleges are in the process of getting NAAC accreditation. The inspections have been completed and colleges are waiting for the rankings,“ he said. The VC said, “The window to apply online for the accreditation process is open only twice a year, due to which some people miss out on it. The Maharashtra Public Universities' Act, 2016 makes it compulsory for the colleges to get accreditation. If they don't do it, they will not be allowed to participate in elections and there is also a provision to cancel their affiliation.“

The issue of NAAC accreditation came to the fore last month after student activist Kalpesh Yadav wrote a letter to the joint director of higher education for Pune division regarding it. In the letter dated September 22, Yadav had demanded disaffiliation of the colleges without the accreditation. “How can we make big claims of world-class education when our colleges are not even accredited by the national agency ,“ the student activist said.

He alleged that the colleges shy away from going through the accreditation process as they are afraid of getting a low rating, which will eventually affect their preference among students.“Officials concerned, in this case the university , are not pulling up such errant colleges because of which officials of such colleges (ones without NAAC accreditation) continue to thrive,“ Yadav said.

After receiving Yadav's letter, the joint director of higher education for Pune division forwarded it to the vice-chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, asking the latter to look into the issue.

Asking the university authorities to take strict action against the errant colleges, Yadav said, “The university should upload data about the colleges' NAAC accreditation on the official website. It will only benefit the students in choosing the right college.“ Students should not suffer because of the mistakes on the part of the colleges, he added.
