As part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has initiated the National Digital Library (NDL) Pilot Project (NDL Phase-I) in April, 2015. The information has been provided by Minister of State (HRD) Mahendra Nath Pandey in a written reply to a question that was raised in the Lok Sabha.
According to Minister Pandey the project cost of the Phase-I is Rs. 39.8 crore, and the project of National Digital Library Project is coordinated by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.
As part of the Phase-I of National Digital Library Project several initiatives will be taken including, setting up 24X7 infrastructure, providing single-window search and browse facility for e-Learning resources to users, including e-Contents that are available in various institutions of the country by integrating Institutional Digital Repository (IDR) of respective institutions and registering users from Participating Institutions.
According to Minister Pandey the services under the National Digital Library is available to all students, teachers, researchers, government officials, and public servants irrespective of their State or Union Territory (UT).
Who all can be benefited by NDL?
NDL has been designed to benefit all kinds of users like students (of all levels), teachers, researchers, librarians, library users, professionals, differently abled users and all other lifelong learners.
There are so many Digital Libraries. How is NDL different from them?
NDL will provide a single window search facility to act as a one-stop shop for all digital resources. Information can be personalized based on the education level, choice of language, difficulty level, media of content and such other factors while other Digital libraries may not include all these choices. This is thus like a ‘customised service’ provided in a 24×7 integrated environment where learners can find out the right resource with least effort and in minimum time.
