Maratha quota: Caste validity cert not must

PUBLISH DATE 27th June 2019

In a major relief for Maratha students applying for professional courses under the newly created Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC) quota, the state government said they can get provisional admission provided they have applied for a caste certificate.

This step was taken to assuage concerns about delays in procuring caste certificates for Maratha quota applicants in medical, engineering and other professional courses. The higher and technical education department has sent a letter to the state CET cell saying caste validity certificate should not be insisted upon from SEBC quota students applying to professional courses until further orders from the state. Manik Gursal, the commissioner of CET cell, confirmed that SEBC quota students can participate in the admission process with caste certificates, but caste validity certificates will not be mandatory till further orders.

The rollback comes a day after it was announced that caste validity certificates have to be submitted in the first round of admissions to technical and professional degrees. “Students from other reserved categories, however, will have to submit their caste validity certificates till the last date of the first round of admissions for MBBS/BDS courses,” higher and technical education minister Vinod Tawde told the state assembly on Wednesday. “It is a fact that the system to check the caste validity for SEBC category students is inadequate...We received many representations and the CM took a meeting today at which the decision was taken.”

The issue was raised in the assembly by NCP leader Jayant Patil. “The delay in checking caste validity for SEBC category has affected Maratha students. They have applied for verification and the government has their token. We request the state allows the admission to go ahead and allow for one year’s time to check caste validity.”

An aspirant from the open category, however, raised concern over the instances of bogus certificates increasing after such a directive. “The state should grant provisional admissions to students who have not managed to procure validity certificates and ask them to submit it at a later stage.”
