The Lila Poonawalla Foundation, an educational trust awarded scholarships to over 300 schoolgirls at the 8th School Scholarship Award ceremony which was held at the Cummins auditorium, Balewadi.
In her welcome speech, Lila Poonawalla spoke about the need to spend on a girl’s education rather than saving that money for their dowry in the future. “Parents should spend on her education and enable her to earn her livelihood and support her family throughout her life,” Poonawalla said.
Sarika Deore, a doctor, who herself was a Lila Fellow and received a scholarship to pursue her studies was present at the function.
“The scholarships awarded by the Lila Poonawalla Foundation are grants which include school bags, cycles, shoes and books. Special counseling sessions are conducted for the awardees and in addition their parents are also mentored so that all conflicts are resolved and girls get proper education. The scholarship is for a period of 10 years from Class VII to their graduation,” the foundation’s official release stated.
The release further said, “Since its inception in 1996, over 17,765 scholarships have been granted to 7,396 deserving girls. The foundation gives scholarships to the girls from Pune, Amaravati and Wardha district. In Pune LPF supports girls from school level until post graduation.
