With the online space getting wider, there are more fraudulent postings than ever before
Most of us can spot a fraudulent job posting when we see one. But, there are people who fall for them hook, line and sinker — and they make a substantial number.
So, from time to time, organisations are warning job seekers about such postings.
Here are a few recent examples.
Qatar Airways recently ran a print advertisement informing people that the organisation never charges applicants for interviews or seeks security deposits.
An excerpt from the advertisement:
“Please be aware of fraudulent emails and adverts on social media and never make any payment.”
It also provided an email ID and urged job seekers to report any fraudulent posting they might 0come across.
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) recently issued a disclaimer that the notification for the posts of Assistant Administrative Officers was fake and had not come from the organisation.
It also made it clear that any advertisement on vacancies published by LIC in newspapers will also be displayed on LIC’s website, www.licindia.in.
Job portals also run silent campaigns against the scourge of fake postings.
Monster.com sends email alerts to jobseekers regularly, listing the “dos and don’ts” to be borne in mind while searching for jobs.
The online job portal Shine.com is running a campaign
#NoMoreJobFraud to help people to avoid getting duped by fake job postings.
According to job-search companies, job frauds have become prevalent due to the expansion of the online space. Many job scamsters use sophisticated methods to avoid detection.
“Due to growth of online transactions, it’s easy for people to fall prey to fake job offers. We have to be extremely aware of how these things work, as fraudsters often use names of well-known job portals to dupe people,” says Zairus Master, CEO, Shine.com.
He wants companies that have become a victim of job scam to come and speak out.
Job site Indeed enable people looking for jobs to post their resumes and also research companies. But, it ensures that any job postings uploaded on the site has been vetted by a team internally.
“The team uses machine learning, and other processes to determine what the job is, where the job is located, who the employer is and other identifiers. All these things are then reviewed to see if the job posting meets Indeed’s search quality standards and is fit to be added to the search engine,” says a spokesperson of Indeed.
How do companies reduce the risk of job frauds?
Sonia Singal, co-founder, CA Job Portal, which functions as a job search engine, and a consultant, says companies either stop outsourcing the recruitment process or reduce the number of vendors involved in shortlisting candidates.
“The vendors are brought on board only after a thorough background check,” she says.
