How to calculate JEE Main score and rank?

Use the answer key of JEE Main 2018 and get an estimate of your score in the entrance test after comparing your attempted answers in the actual paper. The methodology of calculating JEE Main score makes use of the marking scheme given by CBSE wherein using it candidates can calculate their JEE Main 2018 score and rank. Check the formula below to calculate JEE Main score.

Formula to calculate JEE Main Score

JEE Main Score = 4 marks x number of correct answers - number of wrong answers x 1

Calculating JEE Main rank – The actual scores of candidates in JEE Main 2018 will be used to determine the ranks of the engineering entrance test. Your rank will be affected directly by the score you secure in the test. This means that the higher your score, the higher will be your rank of JEE Main 2018. Also, if two or more candidates score equal marks, then tie-breaking rule or inter-se-merit will be applicable.

When will Inter-se-merit be applicable?

In case two or more candidates secure equal marks/score in JEE Main, then in that case the inter-se-merit or tie-breaker policy will be applicable. Check all the details about the fundamentals and basic rules for the application of inter-se-merit.

To resolve a tie or apply inter-se-merit, check the guidelines below in the sequence given.

Inter-se-merit Guidelines for JEE Main Paper 1 & 2

JEE Main Paper

Tie Breaking Criterion

JEE Main Paper I

  • First, candidates with higher marks in Mathematics in JEE Main 2018 will be given better rank.

  • Thereafter, candidates with better/higher marks in Physics will be given a higher rank.

  • Still if the tie exists, then the ratio of positive marks and negative marks secured by the candidates will be taken into account. Candidates with higher absolute value of the ratio will be given higher rank.

  • In case the tie is not broken yet, then candidates will be given the same JEE Main rank.

JEE Main Paper II

  • First, the candidate securing higher marks in Aptitude Test will get higher rank.

Still if the tie is there, then higher marks in Drawing Test will be considered to offer higher/better rank.

  • At the next stage to break the tie, the ratio of positive and negative marks will be taken into account.

  • Candidate having higher absolute value of the ratio will be given higher rank.

  • In case the tie is not broken, candidates will be given same ranks.

What should you check along with JEE Main Result 2018?

While checking their JEE Main result, the candidates must download their result, score card/rank card, as this will be needed for admissions. Along with the result of JEE Main 2018, the candidates must also check their qualifying status for JEE Advanced 2018. Candidates must check if they are among the top 2,24,000 candidates of JEE Main 2018 who have qualified for appearing in JEE Advanced. If they have, then they have to register for appearing in JEE Advanced 2018 tentatively in first week of May 2018. In case candidates do not figure out in the top 2,24,000 candidates shortlisted for JEE Advanced from JEE Main, then candidates must also start applying for state level counselling/admission processes and university level admission wherein they accept JEE Main score.

Know the difference between percentage and percentile

Candidates must know the difference between percentage and percentile as for admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs one of the eligibility criteria is to secure a place in the top 20 percentile of the respective class 12th board. This top 20 percentile is different than the percentage of marks and is calculated separately. Check the process of calculating percentile below.

Difference between percentage and percentile?

Percentage

Percentile

Percentage = number obtained / total x 100. Eg 50/360 x100

Percentile = 100 x Number of candidates in the group with aggregate marks less than the candidates/ Total number of candidates in the group

The top 20 percentile of the respective class 12th board is calculated category-wise for the candidates on the basis of their scores in class 12th respective board exam. This percentile is matched with the published top 20 percentile of the board as announced by CBSE.

For instance, the total number of candidates registered in a particular board is 13918 and total number of candidates appeared is 13711, then, the percentile will be calculated as follows,

Percentile of a student who has scored 50% marks in the Board where 2218 candidates have scored below him

Percentile score for 50% marks in the Board will be calculated as 2218 x 100/ 13711 = 16.18

What subjects will be taken into account for calculating percentile?

The following 5 subjects will be taken into consideration for calculating top 20 percentile in class 12th or qualifying exam for JEE Main Paper I:

  • Language

  • Physics

  • Mathematics

  • Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject

  • Any other subject

Important: In case candidates have taken 6 subjects in the qualifying exam, then the better of the fifth or sixth will be take into account.

For calculating top 20 percentile of the qualifying marks for JEE Main Paper II (B.Arch/B.Plan), the following subjects will be considered:

  • Mathematics

  • Other four subjects.

JEE Main Rank List 2018
