Software giant IBM opened an automation innovation centre at its facility in Pune on Friday. This is its fourth such facility in the Asia-Pacific region.

This facility will be used by IBM to service its clients, who are looking to automate whole or part of their business processes across a number of sectors — finance, health care, manufacturing (especially automobile). The evaluation of the processes that need automation includes factors such as the repetition of the process, the level of human intervention required and regulatory issues.

The AIC in Pune is the second such facility in India, the other being based in Bengaluru. Its other centres in the region include Dalian in China, and Manila in the Philippines.

“In this facility, we have three key areas — the collaboration hub, where we sit with the client to decide on the process which can be automated, the ways to scale it up, and the technology to use; the immersive experience zone, where we give live demos to our clients with the automation solution in action; and our command centre, where the operational life of the automation bots that we created is monitored,” Amitava Sharma, vice-president of automation of IBM’s India business unit, said.

Sharma said both existing talent and new hires have been used for this facility, with newer skill sets being needed in sectors like automation. “We have done both hiring and retraining, and otherwise, we are constantly hiring new talent. There is a concentration of good colleges in Pune, as is the case where we choose to set up new centres. We are looking at RPA (robotic process automation) developers, Python developers, full-stack and UI developers too, as well as automation architects, besides business process experts,” he said.
